Movie fans can return to the world of Middle-earth next December with the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Directed by Andy Serkis, the film fills in the story between Bilbo Baggins’ departure from the Shire and the creation of the Fellowship. It’s been a highly anticipated, but secretive, project. While we knew Andy Serkis would reprise his role as Gollum/Smeagol and Ian McKellen would return as Gandalf, details about the rest of the cast remained unknown – until now. Warner Bros. recently revealed the full cast list at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
Warner Bros. announced the cast for the upcoming film, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum, on Tuesday. Elijah Wood will reprise his role as Frodo Baggins, and Kate Winslet will join the cast as Marigol. Andy Serkis will return as Gollum and Smeagol, alongside Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Leo Woodall as Halvard, and Lee Pace as Thranduil. Most notably, Jamie Dornan has been cast as Strider, taking over the role previously held by Viggo Mortensen.
Get ready! The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is coming to theaters December 17, 2027.

Will Fans Be Happy With the Aragorn Recasting?

Both Andy Serkis and Viggo Mortensen have confirmed Mortensen won’t be returning as Aragorn in ‘The Hunt for Gollum.’ This news has sparked mixed reactions from fans, who are protective of the character. Although Leo Woodall was previously rumored to be taking on the role, it’s now confirmed he’ll play Halvard instead, with Jamie Dornan stepping into Mortensen’s shoes as Aragorn – a decision that’s likely to cause some discussion among fans.
Most fans agree that casting new actors for The Hunt for Gollum, rather than using digital technology to make the original actors look younger, is a good approach. It remains to be seen how well the new and returning actors will blend together, but we’ll find out when the film is released in December 2027.
