CI Games recently showcased the female armor designs for Lords of the Fallen 2, and many viewers feel the style appears outdated, resembling designs from a century ago.
Honestly, the armor sets feel super cookie-cutter, like something you’d see in a cheap mobile game ad. It’s like the developers asked what we wanted – “fierce, beautiful, and provocative” – and just went with the most basic interpretation of those words. It’s a bit disappointing, to be honest.
This is what you get:
A YouTuber named TheBackgroundNPC recently showcased some designs, praising them as evidence of a studio that truly pays attention to player feedback. This discussion originates within online communities that often criticize the character designs in large-budget Western games, particularly those involving female characters.
These outfits prioritize appearance over protection. They’re more revealing than practical, leaving most of the body exposed – including the chest, stomach, thighs, and legs. Real armor is meant to cover and shield the entire body, so this seems counterproductive.
This shift in strategy and how the company markets its games largely comes from CI Games and its CEO, Marek Tyminski, who incorrectly believes that diversity and inclusion efforts are harming the gaming industry. Studio leaders have echoed common arguments along these lines.
According to global marketing director Ryan Hill, some recent video games have tried to include social or political messages, but many players haven’t responded well to this approach. This has led to several highly anticipated games selling poorly in the past year.
We’re committed to creating fun and successful games, so we’ve decided to keep them focused purely on entertainment. We’ve seen that including social or political messages can be risky and detract from the player experience, and we won’t be adding those elements in the future.
Instead, the armor designs often look old-fashioned and are the kind you’d typically see advertising simple mobile games.
When the game Lords of the Fallen launched in 2023, it didn’t include certain design choices that have become popular in discussions about inclusivity. However, updates released after launch have shifted the game to align with perspectives critical of those inclusive designs. For instance, the character creation process originally allowed players to choose from different body types, but now only offers a simple ‘Male’ or ‘Female’ selection.
