There’s a lot of debate about why Bungie’s Marathon isn’t attracting a massive player base, but both the developers and Sony agree that some adjustments are needed. They’re starting with a renewed focus on player-versus-environment (PvE) content, beginning with Season 2: NIGHTFALL on June 2nd.
Bungie recently shared details about upcoming changes to their extraction shooter, announcing two new game modes. The first will launch with the new season and will primarily be a player-versus-environment (PvE) experience, with some limited player-versus-player (PvP) elements. The second mode, coming later in the season, will be exclusively focused on PvE gameplay.
The developer isn’t making a major change, but is instead focusing on giving players more flexibility. They want to offer different ways to play the game to suit various groups of friends, how you’re feeling, and how much time you have, so you can enjoy the exciting world of Tau Ceti in a way that works best for you.
The new game modes won’t disappear after Season 2—they’ll continue as experimental options. Bungie is also planning to test a mode focused solely on player-versus-player combat. There’s a chance these modes could become regular parts of the game or offer entirely new ways to play. Players can also look forward to Duos being available for everyone, an improved matchmaking system designed to create better and more flexible matches—especially for experienced players—and a long-requested increase to the amount of storage space in the Vault.
The team hasn’t revealed all of its future plans yet, but they’ve announced a new area focusing on alien themes and effects that will mess with your character. This zone will introduce both large and small new enemies from the Tau Ceti system and beyond. Players can also look forward to more weapons that use batteries, and new ways to escape missions that will force you to balance carrying a lot of loot with staying safe.
