Mark Wahlberg’s $170M Action Comedy Hits Paramount+ Streaming Charts, 16 Years Later

With so many streaming options available, movies that didn’t do well in theaters can still find an audience at home – a good example is Channing Tatum’s Roofman. Streaming also lets us revisit older favorites. These services are always adding new content, giving viewers lots to choose from. While people often check out the newest releases, sometimes older movies or shows unexpectedly become popular again. Currently, a funny action comedy with Mark Wahlberg is getting a lot of attention from Paramount+ subscribers.

According to streaming data from FlixPatrol, The Other Guys is currently the ninth most popular movie on Paramount+, even beating out Guns Up. It’s held this spot for several days now.

Why The Other Guys Is Worth Watching on Paramount+

Released in 2010, The Other Guys is an action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell as two NYPD detectives, Terry Hoitz and Allen Gamble. While other officers like Christopher Danson (Dwayne Johnson) and P.K. Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) enjoy thrilling chases, Hoitz and Gamble are stuck with mostly office work. Directed by Adam McKay, a frequent collaborator with Ferrell, the movie is a funny take on classic buddy cop films. The story follows Hoitz and Gamble as they try to prove themselves as capable detectives, and much of the humor comes from the fact that they’re not the typical action heroes you’d expect – which is where the film gets its name.

I’ve always loved Adam McKay’s work, especially how he started out as a truly hilarious comedic filmmaker. Before he tackled serious, award-winning films like The Big Short, Vice, and Don’t Look Up, he and Will Ferrell created some of the funniest movies of our time! Their partnership was magic, giving us instant classics like Anchorman and Talladega Nights. Even The Other Guys, while maybe not quite as legendary, is still a brilliant parody of action movies and perfectly fits with their style. It’s funny to me that it actually has the highest critic score on Rotten Tomatoes of all their collaborations – 78%! People really appreciated how fresh and funny it was, and I definitely do too.

Just the basic idea behind The Other Guys is a good reason to watch it, but the movie is made even better by its fantastic cast. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg have great chemistry as an odd-couple pair of cops, and the supporting actors are equally strong. Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson are hilarious as the department’s celebrated action stars, fully embracing their usual on-screen personalities and taking things to the extreme. The film is also packed with fun cameos from people like Derek Jeter and Tracy Morgan, which makes it even more enjoyable.

It’s been a while since Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay last collaborated on a film – 2013’s Anchorman 2 – although McKay has still produced some of Ferrell’s projects. Fans are sad it’s been so long, as the pair clearly worked well together and consistently delivered hilarious movies. The recent reappearance of The Other Guys on streaming services is a great reminder of their successful partnership, making it a fun movie to revisit. While we hope they team up for another film someday, they’ve already made a lasting impact on comedy, and The Other Guys is often considered their best work.
