Martin Compston talks new show The Revenge Club: “I think we’ve all got little revenge fantasies”

Martin Compston, known for his role in Line of Duty, admitted he’s sometimes wished he could get even with someone, jokingly suggesting it might be nice to get revenge on Uri Geller.

Actor Compston is discussing his new thriller, The Revenge Club, on Paramount+. The show centers around six people in a divorce support group who team up to get revenge on those who hurt them.

But what starts out as petty pranks — rat infestation, anyone? — eventually turns deadly.

The group’s increasingly risky plans are pushing them to the edge, and it’s becoming hard to tell right from wrong – someone could end up going too far.

Everyone has probably imagined getting back at someone who wronged them, whether it’s someone from high school, a driver who damaged their car, or a difficult coworker,” Compston explains.

Most people are inherently good, and their connections usually remain within the realm of imagination. However, this group of six found themselves unexpectedly thrown together. They wouldn’t normally be friends – their lives don’t typically intersect – but after a few drinks and a little encouragement, the idea of a friendship suddenly seemed appealing.

“But they get carried away. It gets out of hand.”

David Compston stars as Calum, a father trying to rebuild his relationship with his daughter after a divorce. Aimée-Ffion Edwards (known from shows like Slow Horses and Peaky Blinders) plays Emily, whose life is shattered when her husband leaves her.

Although The Revenge Club deals with some difficult emotions, it also has a surprisingly dark and funny side, which Martin Compston particularly loved.

Throughout the project, I was able to explore the comedic aspects more freely, which I’ve often had to hold back on in the past. Our directors, Tim Kirkby and Dan O’Hara, created a comfortable environment where I felt safe pushing those boundaries.

There was a moment where I had to step in, and I just decided to go for it – I thought, ‘What the heck, I’ll do a cartwheel or a somersault!’ It probably didn’t make it into the final version, but that’s the kind of atmosphere it was. We were encouraged to try things out, and if it was funny and worked, great – if not, no problem.

“So I loved being in that. It felt a real free place to express yourself.”

Joining Martin Compston and Stephen Graham in ‘The Revenge Club’ are talented actors Meera Syal (‘Mrs Sidhu Investigates’, ‘The Kumars at No. 42’), Sharon Rooney (‘Barbie’, ‘Daddy Issues’), Douglas Henshall (‘Shetland’), Chaneil Kular (‘Sex Education’), and Amit Shah (‘Mr Bates vs. The Post Office’). Each of them plays a character with their own personal struggles.

Perhaps they could take a leaf out of Compston’s book…

It wasn’t about getting even, but we did a prank: we swapped numbers with your friend’s phone. Now, he thinks he’s texting a girl, but he’s actually texting you!

It might seem amusing, but it’s not so funny when it happens to you. It’s actually quite unpleasant.
