Martin Scorsese’s Dream The Mandalorian & Grogu Cameo Officially Explained – “…It was Like ‘What?!’” [Exclusive]

With the movie’s release date getting closer, Star Wars fans are buzzing about The Mandalorian and Grogu – sharing their hopes, predictions, and even some concerns about the film. Even creators Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau recently spoke with ComicBook about the movie, and a cameo appearance that everyone seems to love.

Let’s talk about that cameo everyone’s buzzing about – Martin Scorsese! The legendary director shows up as an alien shopkeeper, and it’s a delightful little detail that his character actually has the same eyebrows as the man himself. When I asked Dave Filoni about it, he played it cool, but Jon Favreau really spilled the beans. Apparently, they took Scorsese’s performance and handed it over to the animators, who absolutely ran with it. Favreau said they were inspired by the character design and poured extra effort into making it special – he genuinely believes it’s some of the best animation in the whole project. It’s clear Scorsese’s appearance wasn’t just a quick gag; it was a collaborative effort that everyone involved clearly enjoyed.

Scorsese Was An Easy Sell on Appearing in The Mandalorian and Grogu

According to Filoni and Favreau, all it took to get the project going was a phone call from Kathleen Kennedy. Favreau shared that his love of movies was heavily influenced by George Lucas and Martin Scorsese, and he was surprised to learn they were actually friends who supported each other’s work. Despite seeming like they operated in different cinematic worlds, they were part of a close-knit group during that time.

We were thrilled when Martin Scorsese agreed to be in the project – it happened incredibly quickly! Casting director Sarah Finn remembers being surprised when his name came up – she joked, ‘Martin Scorsese?!’ – but Kathy immediately called him, and he said yes. It was unbelievable! It’s fantastic for Jon Favreau to collaborate with someone he admires, and it’s a real treat for fans who will get to see Scorsese play a hilariously quirky alien and deliver an amazing performance.

The conversation also turned to Trapper Wolf, the character voiced by Dave Filoni. People were curious about a possible spin-off series and how the character got such a cool name. Jon Favreau joked that Filoni actually requested fewer scenes featuring himself. Filoni explained he wanted the movie to be the best it could be and was happy to step back. It also came out that Favreau is a big fan of the Trapper Wolf action figure – he bought a whole case and had Filoni sign them all.
