Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum recently shocked fans by admitting his favorite superhero isn’t from Marvel at all. When asked if Spider-Man is the greatest superhero ever, the head of streaming, television, and animation surprisingly chose a DC Comics character instead.
Brad Winderbaum doesn’t agree with Spider-Man being the best superhero
Brad Winderbaum, who leads streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios, doesn’t believe Spider-Man is the greatest superhero of all time.
When asked about his preference on The Escape Pod Podcast, Marvel executive Winderbaum surprisingly chose Batman over Spider-Man. He clearly stated he favored the DC Comics hero during the discussion.
Winderbaum admitted Spider-Man is a great hero, but he personally believes Batman is the best. He said, ‘Batman is the greatest of all time, with Spider-Man right behind him.’ He also pointed out that both heroes have fantastic groups of villains.
Winderbaum highlighted Batman’s humanity as a major reason for his preference, noting that Batman’s relatable, human qualities give him an inspiring quality. He stressed that because Batman doesn’t have superpowers, the character is uniquely appealing.
I’ve been hearing a lot about what makes Batman different from other superheroes, and a recent conversation really clarified it for me. The executive I spoke with shared that he’s most drawn to Batman stories where the villain is the real focus. He described Batman as the obstacle, the core problem the villain has to overcome – and he thinks that’s a brilliant storytelling technique. It’s not about Batman solving the crime, it’s about how Batman forces the villain to act, and that’s what makes those stories so compelling.
During a recent podcast, Winderbaum shared his excitement about the ongoing Absolute Batman comic series. He enjoyed the first six issues, calling them “so good.” He particularly praised the story’s unique take on Batman, portraying him as a hero for the working class and flipping the traditional villain role onto a billionaire character. Winderbaum also highlighted the compelling and innovative portrayal of Alfred.
The podcast hosts were surprised when the head of Marvel TV spoke positively about a character from a competing company.
