Fans are incredibly excited about Marvel Studios’ plans to relaunch the X-Men movies. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe builds towards the major crossover event, Avengers: Doomsday, and its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, the MCU will essentially be starting fresh. This new beginning will allow the X-Men to join forces with other popular heroes like the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man. Because of this, it’s crucial that Marvel gets the X-Men right – the future of the MCU could depend on it.
X-Men reboot director Jake Schreier (known for Thunderbolts) has announced some exciting news about the script. He’s brought on two frequent collaborators, Joanna Calo and Sonny Lee Sung Jin, to write a draft.
Netflix’s Beef Team Is Writing the MCU X-Men Reboot

Lee Sun Jin and Calo are the creative minds behind the hit Netflix series Beef, which is returning for a second season. Lee Sun Jin created, runs, writes, and produces the show, while Calo is a key writer and part of the team led by director Jake Schreier. Beef received widespread acclaim, winning three Golden Globes and earning numerous Emmy nominations in its first season. Calo has also enjoyed success writing for other popular shows like BoJack Horseman (Netflix), Hacks (HBO Max), and The Bear (Hulu), as well as the upcoming film Thunderbolts. Many fans hoped to see Calo involved with the upcoming X-Men reboot, and the addition of Lee Sun Jin to the project is seen as a major win.
The success of Beef came from its ability to blend so many different genres into one thrilling and unpredictable show. It wasn’t just a story about a simple car accident escalating into a feud; it was a mix of drama, comedy, action, and even moments of horror. Similarly, the revival of X-Men ’97 proved that fans love the X-Men not only for its themes of oppression and superpowers, but also for the complex, dramatic relationships within the team. The X-Men are full of romantic entanglements, personal trauma, internal conflict, and constant struggles with identity – they’re superheroes, activists, students, and sometimes even revolutionaries. Plus, the franchise often dives into complex sci-fi and horror elements. To bring this to film, you need a team that can balance all these influences while still keeping the focus on the characters. The creators of Beef are uniquely qualified for that challenge – they’re the only ones we feel confident can pull it off.
Now there’s even more pressure on Beef Season 2 to show it wasn’t a one-hit wonder – and to assure fans that the future of the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in good hands.
