The latest Star Wars installment delves deeply into the character of Darth Maul, offering a more detailed exploration of his motivations and history. While the animated series shows his efforts to rebuild his criminal organization, actor Sam Witwer believes Maul is a far more nuanced character than simply a villain.
I imagine Maul as a kid who largely fended for himself. Given how busy Darth Sidious was, there’s no way he could have constantly supervised Maul. Because of this, I picture Maul having a surprisingly eventful childhood, though a restricted one. He likely sought out experiences, maybe sneaking around and forming relationships he kept hidden. Sidious quickly killed the first person Maul confided in, so Maul probably kept a lot to himself. Ultimately, I believe Maul is full of untold stories and secrets.
The vastness of the Star Wars galaxy allows for the possibility that ideas about Maul’s early life, as explored by actor Sam Witwer, could become official storylines. Though these glimpses into his past currently exist only in Witwer’s portrayals, Disney and Lucasfilm could expand upon them. Maul has consistently defied simple categorization as a villain, and Witwer’s continued dedication to the character suggests his interpretations of a younger Maul might reveal genuine aspects of his history. Witwer has indicated that not all of Maul’s backstory will be shown, and he hopes fans will continue to imagine and create their own versions of his youth.
We want to maintain an air of mystery with the show, but we can hint at characters’ pasts through their current actions. The idea is to give viewers clues that make them wonder about what happened to the characters when they were younger, and encourage them to build those backstories in their own minds.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Showcases Modern Star Wars At Its Best
Sam Witwer consistently delivers excellent performances, but he truly shines in Shadow Lord. This isn’t just some of his best work within the Star Wars universe—it’s a career highlight. He portrays Maul with a voice that feels constantly on the edge, making every line even more frightening. Witwer elevates Maul’s presence and gives the character a remarkable depth and weight.
“Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord” is a fantastic exploration of the darker side of the Star Wars universe and a deep look into the mind of one of its most iconic villains. It sets a new standard for Star Wars animated series and quickly becomes one of the best TV shows in the entire franchise.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is now streaming on Disney+.
