Meryl Streep isn’t letting her time as a grandmother go slippin’ through her fingers.
Over six years after becoming a grandmother, the actress known for Mamma Mia! says it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of her life.
Meryl described it as savoring every moment, taking full advantage of everything life has to offer, because she’s keenly aware of how quickly time passes, as she shared in a recent interview with Vogue.
Meryl Streep and her ex-husband, Don Gummer, became grandparents in 2019 when their daughter, Mamie Gummer, had a son named Peter, who is now six, with her then-partner, Mehar Seth. Two years later, they welcomed their second grandchild, Mary, age four.
Meryl Streep and Don Gummer’s family continued to grow with their children also having kids. Henry and Tamyrn Gummer had two children, Ida (born in 2020) and Quinn (born in 2022). Grace Gummer and her husband, Mark Ronson, welcomed two daughters in 2023 and 2025.
Oh my gosh, Meryl said it again! Even though her oldest grandchild is still so little, just starting school, she perfectly described it – she said it’s “the longest, shortest time.” It’s like, you blink and they’re grown, but you cherish every single second. It’s just… Meryl gets it, you know? And she’s a mom to Louisa Jacobson too, which is amazing!
“There’s no getting anything back once it’s gone,” the 76-year-old explained. “So enjoy what you have while you can… I think it’s wonderful. I’m blessed with six grandchildren, all under the age of six.”
And while Meryl joked she’s an “over-involved” grandmother, she couldn’t have it any other way.
It means the world to me that my children spend time with my grandchildren,” the actress from The Devil Wears Prada shared. “The challenge is they live on opposite sides of the country, so I travel quite a bit to see them.

As for whether Meryl would welcome more grandchildren? You can count on it.
“I hope we’re not done,” she added, “but we’ll see.”
Of course, Meryl will never really be done being a mom, either.
Speaking to Good Housekeeping in 2008 about raising her four children with so much public attention, she described it as “a difficult job, but a wonderful one.”
