Fashion’s biggest night came and went in style.
On May 4th, the 2026 Met Gala, with the theme “Costume Art,” marked a celebration of the long-standing connection between the Metropolitan Museum of Art and its Costume Institute.
Sabrina Carpenter and Rihanna were among the celebrities who perfectly captured the spirit of the “Fashion Is Art” theme at the event. They arrived at the New York City landmark wearing outfits that celebrated this year’s exhibit, which curator Andrew Bolton explained focused on how clothing shapes and adorns the body.
He explained to Vogue in November that even when we look at depictions of the human body, especially in art galleries, it’s never truly ‘just a body.’ Even nude figures are presented with layers of cultural meaning and societal expectations; they’re always shaped by our values and beliefs.
Bolton explained that the goal was to refocus conversations about art and fashion on the human body itself, celebrating it rather than concealing it, and to use this approach to position fashion as a true art form.
Stars like Beyoncé and Tyla have been showcasing see-through materials and bold, revealing designs. At the same time, Kim Kardashian and Hailey Bieber have embraced styles that highlight and shape the waist, like corsets.
The intentionally broad theme of “Costume Art” was chosen by the Met Gala’s organizers, including Anna Wintour, and co-chairs Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams. Sponsors Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos were also involved in the decision.

Bolton described the approach as daring and impactful, a clear signal of its purpose. He clarified that the aim wasn’t to establish a new ranking system, but rather to dismantle existing hierarchies and emphasize the equal value of both the artworks and the people presenting them.
He explained that fashion, or how people present themselves through clothing, is the unifying element across all departments and galleries in the museum. It’s what ties everything together.
