Michael has taken the stage, and early audiences are sharing their reactions to the movie.
Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, starring Jaafar Jackson as the legendary singer, has faced some challenges before its April 24th release. Concerns have been raised about whether the film will fully address the serious accusations of child sexual abuse made against Jackson. Despite this, industry experts predict the movie could earn around $60 million domestically during its opening weekend, making it the second-highest opening ever for a music biopic, just behind Straight Outta Compton ($60.2 million).
After the world premiere of Michael in Berlin on April 10th – which launched a several-day fan event – people who saw the movie were given the go-ahead to share their first impressions online, without revealing any spoilers. The overall response was very positive, although some viewers had minor criticisms about the story, particularly the ending and how quickly it moved. Here’s a look at some reactions from social media about the music biopic.
Liam Crowley of ScreenRant praised Michael, saying he’s “why we go to the movies.” Crowley was particularly impressed with the film’s recreation of iconic moments from “Thriller” and “Beat It,” noting it was impossible not to react along with the scenes. He also highlighted the film’s ability to evoke both smiles and discomfort when intended, and praised Colman Domingo as an early contender for best supporting actor. While acknowledging some pacing issues, Crowley overall found the film strong and expressed excitement about experiencing it with an audience.
Hunter Bolding was highly impressed with Jaafar Jackson’s performance as Michael Jackson, describing it as energetic and captivating. He also commended Colman Domingo’s depiction of Joe Jackson, calling it powerfully intense. While the movie’s ending wasn’t fully satisfying, Bolding felt the overall story was compelling and a fitting tribute to a legendary performer.
Junior Felix praised the Michael Jackson biopic, calling it one of the best he’s ever seen. He highlighted Jaafar Jackson’s dazzling and mesmerizing portrayal of Michael, and Colman Domingo’s spectacular performance, cementing Domingo’s status as a great actor. Felix also noted the incredible musical sequences and performances, making the film a must-see.
Michael’s official social media account posted a video of fans at the premiere. In the video, people were asked to describe the movie in a single word, and they responded with words like “phenomenal,” “amazing,” “perfect,” “magical,” and “awesome.” You can see the post below.
Gage summed up the movie by saying “PURE AWESOMENESS.”
Whether or not the Michael biopic will be a success with both critics and audiences is still unknown. But if early reactions are any indication, the film could generate a lot of positive buzz from its expectedly large opening weekend and continue to do well in theaters for several weeks afterward.
We don’t know exactly how much the movie needs to earn to be profitable. Although it cost at least $150 million to make – meaning a typical blockbuster needs to earn around $375 million to break even – Lionsgate produced the film. This studio often covers a significant part of its production costs by selling international rights to the movie in advance.
Any major film could really benefit from the growing excitement around Michael. This is particularly important for the upcoming Jackson biopic, which is launching right before the busy summer movie season. It will be competing with several big releases, like The Devil Wears Prada 2 (coming out May 1st) and The Mandalorian and Grogu (released May 22nd), as it stays in theaters.
