The new Michael Jackson movie is a huge success and is expected to become the highest-grossing musical biopic ever made.
The much-discussed film about the famous singer’s life, from his beginnings up to 1988, was released worldwide this week. The singer’s nephew plays him in the movie.
Although critics generally disliked the movie Michael – TopMob gave it a low 2 out of 5 stars – audiences have responded to it more positively.
Despite receiving a 40% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies it as ‘Rotten,’ audiences have overwhelmingly praised the movie.
After receiving 1,000 fan ratings and reviews, Michael currently has a near-perfect score of 96% on the site’s Popcornmeter.
The favourable reviews have also been reflected in initial box office figures.

Early estimates from Deadline show the film grossed between $12.5 million and $13.5 million from preview showings. This is the biggest preview result ever for a musical biopic, surpassing the $4.96 million earned by the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton.
This opening weekend’s earnings are very close to those of the hit movie Project Hail Mary, which earned $12 million initially and $80 million over its opening weekends.
Antoine Fuqua, the director and producer, and his team have hinted that a sequel might be happening.

A potential biopic would probably focus on the later part of Michael Jackson’s career, covering his albums Bad, Dangerous, HIStory, and Invincible. It would also likely address the accusations made against him.
Jafaar Jackson told Entertainment Weekly at the movie’s premiere that they were starting to plan a sequel.
Late last year, Adam Fogelson, who leads Lionsgate’s movie division, told The Hollywood Reporter that although a sequel wasn’t officially announced, the team was actively developing plans to quickly follow up the first film with more content featuring Michael.
Michael is out now in UK Cinemas.

As a TV reviewer, I’ve been following Tilly Pearce’s work for a while now, and she really knows her stuff. She covers everything – one minute she’s dissecting the drama of shows like Love Is Blind, the next she’s deep into the world of sci-fi with something like Fallout. She’s a fully accredited journalist – holding the NCTJ Gold Standard – and she’s clearly got experience, having previously held deputy editor roles at both Digital Spy and Daily Express US. She’s definitely someone to watch in the TV journalism world.
