Miles Teller’s new movie, Eternity, coming out in 2025, is getting a great response from both critics and audiences. Many believe it could revitalize the romantic comedy genre, which some, like Reese Witherspoon, feel is fading in popularity. Witherspoon recently discussed her thoughts on the genre, and Teller later shared his perspective.
What Reese Witherspoon Said About Rom-Coms
Reese Witherspoon recently discussed how dating has changed while appearing on Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert. She believes one reason for this shift is that movies and TV shows don’t portray romance as often as they used to, which may be making younger people less likely to make the first move in relationships.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why, but there was a shift around the time the internet and social media became popular. Suddenly, romantic comedies – which were actually a surprisingly good way to learn how people interact – started to feel awkward and outdated. We essentially learned social cues from movies starring actors like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, and then we just stopped appreciating them.
Reese Witherspoon has a good point. Romantic comedies actually could help young people today learn how to confidently pursue relationships in real life, instead of just through social media. Classic movies like Say Anything… and Love Actually even encourage people to take the initiative and make the first move.
Reese Witherspoon, an Academy Award winner, actually built a lot of her early success with romantic comedies. Many of these films offer insightful lessons – Sweet Home Alabama emphasizes the importance of self-discovery before committing to a relationship, The Importance of Being Earnest highlights the value of honesty, and Just Like Heaven shows how letting yourself be vulnerable can open you up to love. Witherspoon has noted that rom-coms are often re-watched more frequently than more artistic films, suggesting just how well-made and enduring they can be.
Miles Teller Weighed In On Reese Witherspoon’s Take
Other than Eternity, Miles Teller has had his share of rom-coms, too, like Two Night Stand, The Awkward Moment and The Spectacular Now. So he’s definitely familiar with the genre. While discussing his fantasy rom-com with VT, he was told about Reese Witherspoon’s comments regarding the supposed decline of the genre. Here was the talented actor’s adorable response to that:
Well, she needs to make some more! You’ve got to contribute.
I’d jump at the chance to see a romantic comedy with Reese Witherspoon! She actually starred in one earlier this year, You’re Cordially Invited, which you can find on Prime Video. She’s so charming and funny in these kinds of movies, and I hope she continues to make them – it’s great to see movies that are both fun and encourage young people to be proactive and ask others on dates.
While romantic comedies aren’t as dominant as they were in the past, great ones are still being made. 2025 has actually been a particularly strong year for the genre, with successful films like Eternity and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. Critics also praised Bowen Yang’s The Wedding Banquet.
Since people still seem to enjoy romantic comedies, hopefully we’ll see more of them in the future. It would be great to see actors like Miles Teller and Reese Witherspoon continue to star in these kinds of movies too.
