Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Time Travel Changes the Monsterverse Forever

Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has introduced time travel into the story. The season concluded with Titan X returning to Skull Island for a showdown with Kong. Unlike other films in the Monsterverse that emphasize large-scale action, Monarch used these events to highlight the true antagonists of the franchise: humans. Following the catastrophic events of G-Day, the world remains uncertain about whether humans and Titans can truly coexist.

Isabel Simmons, who comes from a wealthy family and thinks independently, has been researching the Axis Mundi. She’s developed ideas about how it works. As shown in the first season of Monarch, this strange place – accessed by the Titans – causes time to pass differently; a single day there could feel like a year in the real world. However, the second season uncovered that the Axis Mundi is far more complex than previously believed.

The Axis Mundi is the Key to Time Travel

The second season of Monarch initially seemed to confirm the idea that time works differently within the Axis Mundi, explaining why Cate and Kentaro’s father, Hiroshi Randa, disappeared for a year after G-Day. The show suggested he’d entered the Axis Mundi and spent only a day there, but emerged a year later without realizing time had passed differently. However, sharp viewers quickly pointed out a flaw: other characters, like Lee Shaw and Keiko Randa, had also been inside the Axis Mundi and experienced time differently, at a varying rate. This inconsistency created a problem with the established explanation.

The mysteries surrounding Monarch Season 2 were resolved in episodes 6 and 7. While searching for Godzilla, Lee created another portal to the Axis Mundi and unexpectedly received a message from his younger self. The two Lees teamed up, with the 1962 version of Lee secretly placing a tracking device on Titan X long before it woke up. This action altered Lee’s current memories to account for the changes he’d made, and the tracker was suddenly detected. Essentially, a small part of history was rewritten.

The Axis Mundi Can Be Used To Rewrite History

Isabel Simmons is unaware of Lee’s past, but she believes time travel might be possible using something called the Axis Mundi. She’s currently considering two different plans, and it’s not yet clear which one she’ll choose. One plan, which she presented to Kentaro, aims to prevent G-Day from ever happening. This would essentially rewrite history, eliminating the entire Monsterverse timeline as it’s known, saving many lives, and keeping the existence of Titans hidden. It’s understandable why Kentaro liked the idea, as he hopes it could have saved his father.

What really worries me is Isabel’s second plan. She’s convinced the Axis Mundi isn’t just a doorway, but a time machine – she even talks about ‘visiting the future’! But it gets worse. She’s thinking of selling access to it, pitching it as a kind of fountain of youth. Imagine the wealthy and terminally ill paying to essentially wait for a cure to be discovered! It’s a strange mix of wanting to help people and pure greed, and honestly, it just seems completely impossible.

Lee Shaw Proves Isabel’s Plans Won’t Work

Time travel stories often involve paradoxes – situations that seem impossible. The most well-known is the ‘Grandfather Paradox.’ Isabel finds herself facing a similar problem. It goes like this: if someone went back in time and killed their own grandfather before their father was born, they wouldn’t exist. But if they never existed, they couldn’t have gone back in time to kill their grandfather! Different stories handle this problem in different ways, but they all agree: a Grandfather Paradox creates a serious problem.

If Isabel goes back in time and stops G-Day, everything that happened afterward will essentially be erased. This includes her discovering the secrets of the Axis Mundi and even realizing time travel is possible. While some stories create alternate timelines in this situation, Lee’s experiences indicate there’s only one timeline that changes to accommodate time travel. Isabel is on the verge of encountering a classic time travel problem: the Grandfather Paradox.

It’s unclear how altering the past would affect the Monsterverse’s timeline – would it be a minor ripple, or a catastrophic event? Some franchises limit the scope of changes to avoid paradoxes, while others suggest time itself can only handle so much alteration. If Isabel were to create a paradox of this magnitude, it could potentially destroy the entire timeline. Whatever rules govern time travel within the world of Monarch, we’ll likely find out in Season 3.
