Mortal Kombat 1’s DLC Almost Crossed Over With the Movies

It’s been nearly a year since Mortal Kombat 1 received significant updates. NetherRealm Studios stopped releasing new character content after a surprising announcement that there would be no more DLC. Recently, series co-creator Ed Boon told ComicBook that the team had briefly considered a crossover with characters from the recent Mortal Kombat movies, but the idea never moved forward.

During interviews for the new Mortal Kombat 2 movie, Ed Boon was asked about the possibility of Cole Young – the character introduced in the 2021 film as a way for audiences to connect with the story – appearing in a future Mortal Kombat game. He then mentioned some ideas that ultimately didn’t happen.

According to Boon, they almost included a cameo appearance by the character in the series. While developing Mortal Kombat 1, the team considered adding Cole Young as a ‘Kameo Fighter’ – an assist character – to link the game and movie universes together and surprise fans.

However, plans changed and Cole stayed on the silver screen.

We simply ran out of time before we could finish it,” Boon explained. “We had to move on to the next game, and it just never got revisited.

Cole Young Was Almost a Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo

We don’t know what the studio’s next game is, as they haven’t revealed any details yet. However, many people think it might be a new installment in the Injustice series.

Before the release of the final fighters for Mortal Kombat 1, rumors spread that the game’s future looked uncertain. These concerns stemmed from poor sales of the Khaos Reigns expansion, which led to reduced support for the game. Players discovered unused character slots within the game’s files, sparking speculation that characters like Kotal Kahn, Chameleon, Erron Black, Nightwolf, Cassie Cage, or Kung Jin might be added later. However, none of these additions were officially confirmed, leaving it unclear whether these were just early ideas or accurate plans. It’s also unknown how far along development was for Cole, as dataminers didn’t find any related files.

Mortal Kombat has teamed up with movies before. For example, Mortal Kombat 11 featured costumes inspired by the 1995 film, and included the voices and appearances of the original actors: Linden Ashby (Johnny Cage), Bridgette Wilson (Sonya Blade), and Christopher Lambert (Raiden). Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, who played Shang Tsung, was also released as downloadable content.

The recent Mortal Kombat 1 included a crossover with its movie adaptation, featuring character skins that resembled their on-screen looks for Kitana, Shao Kahn, Johnny Cage, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero. However, the timing of these skins felt rushed – they were released almost a year before the movie came out – leading to speculation that it was a way to quickly push out the game’s Definitive Edition. Despite this unusual release strategy, Mortal Kombat 1 has still been a success, selling 8 million copies as of April 2026 and remaining one of the best-selling fighting games of its generation.
