The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie came out at a difficult time for cinemas, but it still proved to be a big success for Warner Bros. Discovery. Even with a release that included streaming on HBO Max and limited theater attendance due to the pandemic, the film earned over $84 million worldwide on a budget of just $55 million. It also broke streaming records, becoming the most-watched movie on HBO Max during its first weekend with 3.8 million viewers. However, fans of the original fighting game were divided on whether the movie lived up to expectations.
As a long-time fan, I remember being a bit disappointed with the first Mortal Kombat movie. Sure, it delivered on the brutal fatalities we expected, but it took some big liberties with the story. A lot of us were frustrated by the new magical system they called ‘Arcana,’ and honestly, the fact that the actual Mortal Kombat tournament barely happened felt like a miss. The biggest issue for me, though, was focusing the story on Cole Young, a character we hadn’t known before, instead of the established fighters. Thankfully, the trailers for Mortal Kombat II suggest they’re learning from those mistakes, and it looks like Cole might be in trouble!
Cole’s Fate in Mortal Kombat II Might Mimic Johnny Cage’s in Annihilation

Despite the unpopularity of the Cole character, Tan gave a strong physical performance, handling the demanding fight choreography and portraying the emotional journey of a man learning about his family history. However, many felt introducing a new ‘chosen one’ character was unnecessary given the rich, thirty-year history and established roster of fighters in the universe. Fans believed the story would have been better served by focusing on the existing characters and their complicated relationships.
The studio has confirmed Cole will be back for the next installment of the marketing campaign for Mortal Kombat II. He’s been featured in promotional materials, and the stunt work for his scenes is more challenging than ever, according to recent interviews with Tan. However, a careful look at the newest footage hints that Cole’s role as the main hero might end in a dramatic and potentially fatal way.

The new Mortal Kombat II film strongly features Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), bringing back the feel of the original games. Cage, a self-absorbed actor unexpectedly caught in a supernatural battle, traditionally helps viewers connect with the story. The trailer promises plenty of intense fighting, with characters like Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) and Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) taking center stage. However, Cole seems to have a limited role, appearing only briefly during a training scene with Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) and Jax (Mehcad Brooks). The story appears to be shifting its focus away from the Young family’s storyline.
Considering how central Cole was to the first movie, his lack of involvement in the big fight scenes hints that Mortal Kombat II might be following a similar story path as the 1997 film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. In that movie, Johnny Cage (played by Chris Conrad) was killed off very early on by Shao Kahn (Brian Thompson). He was killed during the initial attack, a choice that fans didn’t like because it removed a popular character just to show how dangerous the situation was.
Focusing the story on Cole Young instead could be a smart move and please fans. Getting rid of the character who originally took the place of the classic fighters would allow the film to concentrate on the tournament format that viewers have been asking for. Plus, making the previous main character a casualty would instantly raise the stakes and show that anyone could be in danger under the Outworld invasion.
Mortal Kombat II is scheduled to be released exclusively in theaters and IMAX on May 8th.
