A new trailer for Mortal Kombat 2, which hits theaters May 8th, is out now! It’s packed with references to the original video games, including fights shown from the classic side-scrolling view. Fans will also be excited to hear the legendary theme song from the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, “Techno Syndrome” by The Immortals.
The new trailer highlights the immense pressure Johnny Cage will face, as the future of Earthrealm depends on him. It also features classic characters like Raiden, Scorpion, Liu Kang, and Kung Lao. Notably, the trailer reveals that this version of Noob Saibot is actually a transformed Sub-Zero.
The new trailer arrived only a couple of months after the previous one, which introduced viewers to the film’s vibrant characters like Saibot, Scorpion, Shao Kahn, and Kung Lao.
Originally, Mortal Kombat 2 was scheduled to hit theaters in October 2025, but its release was pushed back. It was first moved to May 15th, and then finally set for May 8th. The delay was reportedly to avoid clashing with the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The report also pointed out that May 2026 didn’t have many major film releases. Mortal Kombat 2 was mainly up against Final Destination: Bloodlines and Is God Is.
The new Mortal Kombat 2 movie will continue the story from the first film, and Karl Urban will play the role of Cage. He’ll be joined by Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. Martyn Ford will also appear as Shao Khan.
The film series was successfully revived in 2021. The first movie performed exceptionally well, earning $23.3 million domestically during its opening weekend, even with pandemic restrictions in place. This exceeded Warner Bros.’ initial projections.
With the release of Mortal Kombat 2 approaching next month, fans will be pleased to hear that a third movie is already in the works. Screenwriter Jeremy Slater recently revealed at New York Comic Con that New Line and Warner Bros. are happy with how Mortal Kombat 2 is turning out and have asked him to begin writing the script for the third installment.
NetherRealm Studios recently announced that their new game, Mortal Kombat 1, has sold 8 million copies. Although that’s a significant achievement, it still has a way to go to match the success of Mortal Kombat 11, which had sold over 15 million copies by 2022.
