Mortal Kombat II- REVIEW

FIGHT!

Following the release of the first Mortal Kombat film after the pandemic, a modestly successful sequel, Mortal Kombat II, has arrived. The first film earned $84 million, a number likely affected by lingering pandemic concerns. This sequel appears to be setting up a planned trilogy, and a major draw for fans is the introduction of Johnny Cage (played with playful energy by Karl Urban). We first see him reduced to signing autographs at conventions, before being recruited to fight against Shao Kahn – a hulking, masked villain who resembles Skeletor’s brother – who has taken control of Earthrealm and claimed the daughter of the previous ruler as his own. Now, Johnny Cage and a team of skilled fighters must battle to reclaim their world.

Mortal Kombat II audience…

This film is definitely made for fans of the game, and they’ll find plenty to love, especially with director Simon McQuoid back in charge of the action. While the movie relies heavily on computer-generated imagery, the fight scenes accurately reflect the skills and intensity of the original game. The visuals, entirely created with CGI, would have been perfect for a 3D viewing experience. As with many game adaptations, the story is fairly predictable, and the dialogue sometimes feels awkward – one particularly clunky line, ‘I renounce your legacy of pain and cruelty,’ feels like it could even be pulled from a divorce statement.

Mortal Kombat II is definitely aimed at gamers, and it’s pretty much the perfect movie for teenage boys.
