Okay, so everyone’s been buzzing about a new DC fighting game from NetherRealm, and it looks like that’s happening! But get this – Ed Boon just confirmed they’re also planning another Mortal Kombat game too. He didn’t say much, though – he basically admitted if he said anything more, he’d get in trouble! It’s frustrating, but hey, at least we know more games are on the way!
Interestingly, he also mentioned that NetherRealm Studios is working on more than just another Mortal Kombat game. They have “a lot of projects in development,” which could include expanding their storytelling into other forms of media, like movies or TV shows, beyond video games.
We’re absolutely working on another Mortal Kombat game, and we have several other projects in development too. We’re exploring opportunities beyond just games, including other types of entertainment, and have some exciting announcements planned for the future.
As a big fan of Mortal Kombat, I was really excited to hear how well Mortal Kombat 1 did! The studio announced it’s sold 8 million copies, which is awesome. But it’s interesting to remember that Mortal Kombat 11 was even bigger – it had already sold 15 million copies by 2022. Both are fantastic games, but MK11 definitely left a huge mark!
Following the release of several downloadable characters, including the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the studio announced in May 2025 that it was moving on to new projects and would no longer be creating additional content for the fighting game.
Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know that we’re switching gears over at NetherRealm. It’s tough, I know, and I’m sure some of you will be bummed, but we really need to focus all our energy on the next game and make it the best it can be. We want to deliver something truly awesome, and that’s what we’re prioritizing right now.
Mortal Kombat 1 essentially restarted the series’ storyline after the events of Mortal Kombat 11 and its Aftermath expansion. The game is set in a new timeline created by Liu Kang, who has become a powerful fire god and the master of time. It follows Shang Tsung as he realizes the universe has been working against him.
Compared to the previous game, Mortal Kombat 1 simplified its fighting system, removing customizable moves and returning to the core gameplay found in Mortal Kombat 9 and 10. A new feature, Kameo Fighters, were added – these are assist characters that can help with combos and even special finishing moves. You can find a more in-depth look in our launch review.
Beyond Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm Studios is reportedly planning a new superhero fighting game, but might be ditching the Injustice name. This isn’t surprising, as the last Injustice game, Injustice 2, came out in 2017. After nearly ten years, the studio could explore other DC Comics stories, such as the current Absolute Universe storyline, or even the DC KO crossover series.
