It’s easy to find bad movies, but it’s rare for one to be so terrible it would make an actor want to quit. That happened with a recently added animated film on Netflix. The movie received overwhelmingly negative reviews – barely scoring above 0% on Rotten Tomatoes – and critics called it a complete waste of time.
If you’re looking for a truly terrible movie, look no further than The Emoji Movie. It was critically panned upon release in 2017, initially earning a 0% score from critics – a score that hasn’t improved much. The film even won several Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture. It recently started streaming on Netflix on November 8th, but most viewers might want to skip it. Directed by Tony Leondis, who was a fan of Toy Story, this Sony and Columbia Pictures animated film takes place in the busy city of Textopolis, where Gene is a unique emoji who can display a variety of expressions.
Jordan Peele Retired from Acting Because of The Emoji Movie
Okay, let me tell you, The Emoji Movie is… memorable, but not in a good way. It’s become something of a cautionary tale in the film world, earning a truly dismal 6% on Rotten Tomatoes – audiences were a little kinder at 36%, but still. It’s widely considered one of the worst movies ever made, and here’s a fascinating tidbit: it actually drove Jordan Peele to hang up his acting hat and concentrate solely on directing. Talk about a ripple effect!
Jordan Peele has said that being offered the role of Poop in The Emoji Movie was a turning point that led him to consider leaving acting. He initially thought the offer was ridiculous and needed time to process it. When he asked his manager how much the studio was willing to pay, he learned that Sir Patrick Stewart had already been cast. Peele said that’s when he decided he was done with acting.
Key & Peele narrowly avoided a career misstep by not being involved in The Emoji Movie. The film was almost universally disliked by both critics and audiences, so much so that Rotten Tomatoes simply uses a ‘do not watch’ emoji in its consensus. Critics saw it as a cynical attempt to profit from a popular trend, prioritizing advertising over a good story, funny jokes, and well-developed characters. While not entirely without merit, The Emoji Movie did earn some praise for being visually appealing to children and promoting a positive message about being yourself.
What’s New on Netflix?
While The Emoji Movie might not be worth watching, Netflix has a lot of better choices available this November. You can stream classics like Back to the Future and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, along with newer favorites such as Crazy Rich Asians and Wonka. Other films recently added include Charlie’s Angels, Doctor Sleep, Game Night, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Ocean’s 8.
