As a total history buff and TV addict, I’m thrilled to say one of Netflix’s strongest historical dramas is returning! It’s been nearly three years since we last saw the characters, and honestly, I thought it might never happen, but Netflix is bringing it back – and I couldn’t be more excited.
According to The Telegraph, Netflix is making a prequel to its hit show, The Crown. The original series, which sometimes sparked debate, offered a dramatized look at the British Royal Family during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, and famously featured new actors every two seasons to show the characters growing older.
What Is The Crown Prequel About?
A new report indicates the upcoming prequel to The Crown will begin with the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. Following the success of the original series, Netflix and Left Bank Pictures are reportedly discussing a deal worth around £500 million ($680 million). However, Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed these plans yet.
The new prequel series will cover the years between Queen Victoria’s death and the 1947 wedding of Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) at Westminster Abbey.
I was so excited to hear that Netflix and the studio have finally reached an agreement! Apparently, they’ve been talking about this spin-off series for ages, and it sounds like they just recently finalized everything. It’s great news for fans like me!
Peter Morgan, the creator of The Crown, is likely to lead the upcoming prequel. According to a source, Morgan has already started writing the script, and casting will probably begin next year.
After six seasons, The Crown concluded in 2023. Creator and lead writer Peter Morgan told The Hollywood Reporter he doesn’t currently plan to continue the story into more recent times. However, he hasn’t ruled out revisiting the subject matter, suggesting he could explore past events to subtly comment on the present day.
The Crown Was a Massive Hit
Many consider The Crown to be one of Netflix’s greatest shows, and it has received numerous awards, including an impressive 24 Primetime Emmys. Claire Foy, who portrayed Queen Elizabeth II during the show’s first two seasons, won two Emmys for her performance.
I was really pleased with how the series turned out! While it had some mixed reactions, it was definitely a hit – critics gave it an 81% approval rating, and even more impressively, 92% of audiences loved it!
This story begins in 1947, just before the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten, and extends up to the present day, including current King and Queen Camilla Parker Bowles.
The series The Crown has shown different actors portraying Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip throughout its run. Claire Foy and Matt Smith played the roles in the first two seasons, followed by Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies in seasons three and four. Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce took over the roles for the most recent seasons.
The Crown is streaming on Netflix.
