Netflix is becoming a major player in anime, not only by producing original series like Sakamoto Days, Castlevania, and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run, but also by adding a wide range of existing anime to its streaming library. Recently, they’ve focused on shojo anime, bringing over a well-known and often debated classic featuring a popular crime-fighting protagonist.
All three seasons of Sailor Moon: Crystal are now available on Netflix, though it’s been a somewhat divisive series among fans. Fortunately, Netflix also offers Sailor Moon Eternal and Sailor Moon Cosmos, two movies that are generally much more popular with anime enthusiasts. If you’re looking for the very first Sailor Moon series, you’ll find episodes spread across other streaming services like Pluto TV, Prime Video, and Hulu. But overall, there’s a lot of Sailor Moon content available for fans to enjoy!
What Made Crystal Controversial?
Sailor Moon Crystal debuted in 2014 and broke from tradition for anime at the time. Instead of first airing on Japanese television, all of its episodes were released online before being shown on TV. The show followed this online-first pattern for its subsequent seasons, “Black Moon” and “Death Busters.” Toei Animation, known for popular series like Dragon Ball and One Piece, produced the show. Many anime fans were surprised Toei was involved, given the animation quality wasn’t as high as their other well-regarded works.
Usagi Tsukino is a seemingly ordinary 14-year-old girl, a bit clumsy and prone to crying. But her life changes completely when she meets Luna, a talking black cat with a crescent moon marking. Luna gives Usagi a magical brooch that allows her to transform into Sailor Moon, a hero dedicated to protecting love and peace. Usagi is then given a big responsibility: finding the powerful Silver Crystal and the other Sailor Guardians, as well as the lost princess of the Moon Kingdom. She faces opposition from Queen Beryl, who rules the Dark Kingdom and also wants the Silver Crystal’s power. Even while dealing with school, family, and friends, Sailor Moon and her fellow guardians must save the world!
