Early 2026 looks promising for science fiction fans, with Ryan Gosling starring in the film adaptation of Andy Weir’s popular novel, Project Hail Mary. Shortly after, we can expect new films from Steven Spielberg (Disclosure Day) and Ridley Scott (The Dog Stars), following a recent surge in high-quality sci-fi TV shows. However, there’s disappointing news for those who enjoyed the earlier movie that first brought Andy Weir’s work to the public’s attention.
It’s been a while since Ridley Scott directed a science fiction film – his last one was Alien: Covenant in 2017, but many consider The Martian (2015) his best in the genre. The Martian was a departure for the director of Alien, focusing on realistic survival rather than fantastical creatures. If you’re a subscriber to Netflix or Peacock, be aware that The Martian will no longer be available to stream after December 31st, so watch it now!
The Martian is One Of The Best Sci-Films Ever
One of the things that makes The Martian so enjoyable is its shift in tone from the terrifying suspense of Alien to a more optimistic and hopeful story, even though it centers on the incredibly difficult situation of Mark Watney being accidentally left behind on Mars. Matt Damon delivers a standout performance as the resourceful botanist. While the story could have been bleak and despairing, it instead focuses on Watney’s determination and the unwavering hope of those trying to save him, turning a potential disaster into an inspiring story of teamwork and perseverance.
Many people loved The Martian for how realistically it portrayed space travel and the planet Mars. It’s especially impressive how the movie explains complicated science – like making water on Mars – in a way that’s easy to understand. Considering current concerns about technology and artificial intelligence, the film’s focus on teamwork and human courage feels particularly relevant. If you have Netflix or Peacock, it’s definitely worth watching again in 2025.
Where To Watch The Martian From January 1, 2026
Good news for streamers! Even though The Martian is leaving some platforms, it will be available on Paramount+ starting January 1st. You can also still rent it from most digital stores if you prefer not to subscribe.
