Netflix’s Best Sports Anime of 2025 Achieves Major Box Office Milestone

The anime film 100 Meters, based on the popular manga by Uoto, was a huge success when it premiered in Japanese theaters in September 2025. Though the original manga ran from 2018 to 2019, it didn’t receive widespread international attention. Uoto is also the creator of Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, an award-winning manga that was adapted into an anime series in 2024. While Orb wasn’t a blockbuster, its thoughtful and intricate story earned it recognition as one of the best short series of the past ten years. Just a few months after Orb concluded, Uoto surprised audiences with 100 Meters, delivering another captivating story and stunning animation. The film then became available on Netflix on December 31, 2025, quickly gaining popularity and attracting millions of viewers.

The film quickly became a hit after appearing on Netflix, racking up 1.5 million views in under a week. Its growing popularity worldwide is especially surprising given the limited promotion outside of Japan. According to Oricon, the award-winning anime is still playing in Japanese cinemas months after its release and continues to draw audiences. Years after leaving school, they reconnect as competitors, still chasing the dreams they once shared. While the film has been well-received, a sequel is highly unlikely. The story is based on a concise manga, meaning the adaptation is complete, despite the ending offering potential for further development after a touching and fulfilling conclusion.

The manga hasn’t had a sequel or spin-off, so it’s unclear if the story will continue. But even without one, the film stands on its own as a brilliant work, deeply exploring the power of rivalry and the importance of pursuing your dreams.
