Netflix’s New 3-Part Crime Series Is Officially A Streaming Hit After Just Two Days

Netflix has another hit on its hands.

Netflix is still the most popular streaming service for many, offering a huge selection of movies and TV shows. Crime dramas are a major draw, with series like Ozark, Mindhunter, Untamed, and Black Rabbit proving particularly popular. Netflix has just launched a new crime series, and it’s already looking like a potential hit.

As a huge TV fan, I’ve been following the numbers, and wow! This new show launched on Netflix on June 4th and has quickly become the second most popular series in the U.S. – at least, as of today. It’s already beating out other popular titles like The Four Seasons, Instadocs: Alex Murdaugh, Unconvicted, The Burroughs, and Lawmen: Bass Reeves. Right now, only Michael Jackson: The Verdict is performing better and holding the top spot.

Created by Rob Williams, The Witness tells the story of the 1992 murder of Rachel Nickell and how it impacted her husband, André (played by Jordan Bolger), and son, Alex (Max Fincham), who actually saw the crime. The three-part drama is based on Alex Hanscombe’s memoir, Letting Go. The cast also includes Neil Maskell, Steve Stamp, Eleanor Williams, Mark Stanley, Kerry Godliman, Sean Gilder, and Kevin Eldon.

One reason the show quickly became popular on streaming platforms is the overwhelmingly positive response from critics. Currently, The Witness has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though this is based on a small number of reviews—just eight. Still, it’s a strong indication of the show’s quality, with many reviewers praising its compelling story and excellent acting.

The show’s recent popularity could be due to how realistic it feels. André and Alex Hanscombe, who experienced the actual events the show portrays, worked as consultants on the project. Writer Sarah Williams, known for her work on shows like Killing Eve and The Man in the High Castle, penned all three episodes of The Witness, which were directed by Alex Winckler.

It’s not unexpected that The Witness quickly landed in Netflix’s top 10. The real test will be whether it maintains that popularity in the weeks and months ahead, but there’s good reason to think it will. True crime shows consistently perform well on the platform, as evidenced by the continued success of Netflix’s Monster and its new seasons.

Despite the early popularity of The Witness on Netflix, it’s unlikely to return for a second season. The show was designed as a single, complete story – a miniseries – and doesn’t have any natural paths for future installments. While viewers seem to be enjoying it, it appears to be a one-time offering.
