Netflix’s Spy Thriller With Near-Perfect Audience Score On Rotten Tomatoes Has One Of Its Best Casts

Netflix hosts a hugely popular spy thriller, largely thanks to its outstanding cast – arguably the best assembled for any show on the platform. Spy thrillers are thriving in the age of streaming, and Apple TV+’s Slow Horses has become a standout example of the genre on television.

This British spy thriller is not only a fantastic show, but it consistently releases new seasons every year – a feat many popular Netflix series haven’t achieved. The spy genre is clearly working well for Netflix, with hits like The Night Agent, Black Doves, and the upcoming Unfamiliar attracting viewers worldwide.

Netflix offers several movies with the twists and action fans love in spy stories. Heart of Stone, featuring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, is one example. Another Netflix spy thriller gained even more popularity with its famous cast.

The action thriller The Gray Man premiered on Netflix on July 15, 2022. While critics weren’t impressed – it currently has a 45% score on Rotten Tomatoes – audiences loved it, giving the film a remarkable 90% rating. This difference in opinion suggests the movie delivered the entertainment viewers were hoping for.

Netflix’s Spy Thriller Works Because Of Its Cast

While The Gray Man features some imaginative action and is directed with a good sense of pace and fun by the Russo brothers, its story doesn’t reach the complexity or emotional depth of classic spy thrillers like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Three Days of the Condor, The Bourne Ultimatum, Casino Royale, or Mission: Impossible – Fallout. It lacks the compelling twists, character development, and strong dialogue found in those films.

What really made The Gray Man a huge success for Netflix—it’s currently among the top 10 most-watched movies worldwide—was its impressive cast. The film stars Ryan Gosling, a three-time Oscar nominee who’s currently leading the hit movie Project Hail Mary in cinemas, and Chris Evans, who will soon reprise his role as Captain America in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

I was completely hooked by Ryan Gosling’s performance as the super-cool, quiet assassin, Courtland Gentry! And Chris Evans was fantastic as the over-the-top villain, Lloyd Hansen – their chemistry really made the movie. But it wasn’t just them! The cast was incredible, filled with so many talented and well-known actors – Ana de Armas, Wagner Moura, Billy Bob Thornton, Regé-Jean Page, Dhanush, Jessica Henwick, and a whole bunch more. Honestly, everyone brought their A-game and kept me invested the entire time.

The Gray Man 2 Has Incredible Potential

As of today, there haven’t been any official announcements about a follow-up to The Gray Man. Co-director Anthony Russo mentioned to ScreenRant in February that there wasn’t any recent progress, but many people are still considering the possibility. Given the success of the first movie worldwide, a sequel has the potential to be even more popular.

Joe Russo previously wrote the popular Extraction films for Netflix, proving he can create compelling action movies beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Netflix also has a strong track record with spy thrillers like The Night Agent and Black Doves, demonstrating their understanding of the genre. With all this in place, a sequel to The Gray Man has the potential to be fantastic, especially with its talented cast and plenty of exciting story possibilities.
