Netflix’s Upcoming Sci-Fi Horror Traps a Family Inside a Home With No Way Out in Official Trailer

Everyone’s talking about whether Steven Spielberg’s latest movie was a success, but a new sci-fi horror film on Netflix, called The Last House, might actually become more popular with audiences.

The movie centers on a couple, played by Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, who are thrilled to have finally bought a new house. However, their dream home quickly turns into a terrifying trap when they discover they can’t leave, and the house itself—which seems to repair any damage—is actively keeping them imprisoned with their two children.

The official trailer is legitimately nightmare fuel.

The Last House Brings Bone-Chilling Sci-Fi Horror to Netflix

Louis Leterrier, the director of Now You See Me, helmed The Last House. According to Netflix.com, he promises the film will be incredibly suspenseful, saying that viewers can expect to feel extremely anxious as a family struggles to survive with limited resources and uncover the mystery behind their confinement: “Food is dwindling, and this family has to rely on each other and try to understand what comes next. What’s locking them in, and how will they survive?”

The trailer strongly suggests something supernatural is happening within people’s homes, and whatever it is, it’s about to get much worse. Just as everyone starts to adjust to this terrifying new reality, they discover the shocking reason they’ve been trapped – a reason that initially drew the writer, Lee, to the story.

She explained that she always loved survival stories with an unexpected angle. That’s why this particular story really appealed to her. She was captivated by the thought-provoking questions the movie raised about life and our choices, and she was eager to explore those themes in a fresh, engaging way.

Disclosure Day Might Learn Something from The Last House?

The film, which cost around $200 million to make, earned $44 million in its opening weekend and received generally positive feedback from both critics and viewers.

The movie was originally promoted as sci-fi horror, playing on the fear of the unknown, but many now see it as simply an action film – one critic even called it “one long chase scene.” However, The Last House takes a different approach, prioritizing genuine horror over action. Instead of fast-paced sequences, it builds a slow, unsettling, and creepy atmosphere of dread, reminiscent of classic horror like Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart.

It exposes fear on several levels, externally and internally.

As a film lover, I have a feeling this movie will really resonate with audiences. Wagner Moura put it perfectly – we all understand family, whether it’s messy or wonderful. It’s not about where you’re from or your background; it taps into something really primal – that need to protect the ones you love, to laugh with them, and yes, even to clash with them. It’s just… fundamentally human.

The Last House will premiere on Netflix and lock audiences into their homes on August 7, 2026.
