The newest expansion for Dungeons & Dragons, called Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, introduces seven new character subclasses. These fit perfectly with the game’s 2026 theme of “Season of Horror,” offering dark and interesting options like the College of Spirits Bard, Grave Domain Cleric, and Undead Patron Warlock. One of these subclasses, in particular, seems especially promising, potentially offering powerful and unique builds if its features are similar to those tested in early playtests.
Ravenloft is a classic setting in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, especially well-known from the Curse of Strahd adventure. The latest book will revisit that familiar world, bringing back beloved locations and villains, but also adding plenty of new content. Players can especially look forward to new character classes (subclasses) and backgrounds designed to work with the updated 5.5e rules.
Ravenloft: The Horrors Within Introduces The Reanimator Artificer As A Very Strong Magical Subclass

The Reanimator Artificer is the first new class presented in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. It’s a spellcasting subclass built on the core Artificer class, which has been significantly updated for 5.5e but remains a powerful and versatile option for players who favor Intelligence. Interestingly, the Reanimator was created as a new subclass even before the Artificer class was officially included in the core 5th Edition rules.
The Reanimator Artificer subclass begins with a powerful start, learning specific spells as they gain levels that reflect the theme of ‘mad science.’ It focuses on disturbing experiments and dark magic to create life, drawing inspiration from the story of Frankenstein. At level 3, the Reanimator gains access to spells like False Life, Spare the Dying, and Witch Bolt. As they progress, they unlock even more powerful magic, including Enhance Ability, Animate Dead, Lightning Bolt, Blight, Death Ward, and the incredibly strong Antilife Shell. These spells are so effective that they could form the basis of a strong Artificer character build on their own.
What really sets this class apart is the Reanimator’s ability to create a Reanimated Companion – a powerful ally completely under your control, brought to life through a blend of necromancy and science. Think of it as your own version of Frankenstein’s monster: it gets stronger as you do, and is already a formidable helper from the start. By level three, your companion is completely immune to Lightning damage and can’t be charmed, exhausted, or poisoned. It also has resistance to necrotic and poison damage, giving it even more defenses than you, the Artificer, are likely to have.
Variety Of Undead Minion Types Come With Natural Advantages To The Archetype Itself

The Reanimated Companion has several useful abilities: it can ‘see’ in darkness (Blindsight), explodes with energy when defeated (Death Burst), and heals itself when struck by lightning. At level 3, the Reanimator’s Jolt to Life ability lets players both revive fallen allies and create a burst of lightning, triggering the companion’s healing. This creates a strong combination – players can heal their companions and allies simultaneously. This kind of built-in teamwork isn’t common among all character options, and it becomes even more effective as the companion gains new abilities.
At Level 5, the Reanimator gains the ability to channel their magic through their companion, boosting the power of necromancy or evocation spells when the companion is close by. The companion also gets an enhanced attack called Dreadful Swipe, which prevents enemies from making opportunity attacks until their next turn. This allows the Reanimator to move more freely and effectively set up their powerful spells, with the companion helping to ensure those spells land successfully.
Features Tied To Improving Your Companion Break The Rules Of D&D In Interesting Ways

This character class is already powerful by level 5, but it really shines beyond that, surpassing the capabilities of other classes. At level 9, you gain Improved Reanimation, letting you further enhance your companion with one of three special abilities, granting it new skills. These abilities are:
- Bloated – The companion becomes Medium or Large size, knocking back and dealing more damage to enemies with melee strikes.
- Gaunt – The companion’s speed increases, gaining a climb speed as well. It can also frighten targets that get too close to it.
- Moist – The companion gains a swimming speed, and has a chance to deal acid damage to enemies that land hits against it.
Adding traits to your Reanimated Companion makes it work even better with your spells, giving it an advantage over other party members in terms of how much it can accomplish each turn. Because it only takes a quick action to tell it what to do, you can cast a spell as an Artificer and then have your companion attack twice in the same turn. This Artificer’s flexibility is so strong that even powerful melee characters might have trouble keeping up. Plus, if you don’t give your companion a specific order, it will automatically try to dodge attacks and move to protect you.
The Reanimator’s Level 15 abilities are also quite strong. They let you cast spells without needing certain materials, or boost the damage your companion deals. You can even sacrifice your companion to recover a large amount of health, which can save you from being defeated. This addresses the Artificer’s main weakness – a lack of health and endurance during fights. By teaming up with a powerful companion who has abilities comparable to another player, you can create an incredibly strong and effective character build.
This subclass has a lot of potential for growth with the right Feats, and players can become even more powerful by combining its abilities with features from other classes. However, even without extra customization, the Reanimator Artificer is already well-equipped to succeed, making it a strong choice to play in the Ravenloft: The Horrors Within campaign.
