After the widespread and destructive job cuts at Microsoft, people have been eagerly seeking positive news, and it seems they might find solace as reports suggest that new versions of Fallout games are underway, including a remastered edition of Fallout 3.
As I tune into episode 73 of Friends per Second podcast, Video Games Chronicle journalist Jordan Middler shares some intriguing insights about Xbox’s future. He mentioned that cancellations of high-profile projects like Crystal Dynamics’ Perfect Dark, Rare’s Everwild, and an upcoming MMO from ZeniMax Online Studios (known for The Elder Scrolls Online) might hint at the direction the company is heading in.
In the episode, Middler stated that Xbox is heavily investing in the post-apocalyptic franchise, Fallout, emphasizing it as a major focus. He also mentioned that there are several ongoing projects related to Fallout, including one that fans have been eagerly anticipating.
He added, “We’re not quite there yet to make a statement like ‘You’ll be able to play this game soon.’
Later on, Middler playfully commented, “By the way, New Vegas 2 is on its way, I believe,” though it seems more like a joke rather than a serious statement.
Earlier, during the Microsoft versus FTC legal battle, it became public knowledge that a remastered version of Fallout 3 and Oblivion was in the works. Since then, the latter has been released to widespread praise.
Considering the impressive success of the Oblivion remaster, there’s a strong possibility that the remastering of Fallout 3 will carry on with vigor.
Leaving out the fact that the Fallout TV series garnered numerous awards and attracted a vast number of viewers on Amazon Prime, it’s still noteworthy.
It’s worth noting that the Fallout TV series, which was praised with multiple awards and drew in millions of viewers on Amazon Prime, isn’t even the main point here.
Given the opportunity to engage an abundance of potential new enthusiasts and a vast community of longtime fans eagerly awaiting a fresh Fallout game or update, Microsoft finds itself in a position where rebuilding trust could be significantly beneficial.
Notably, in the year 2021, Microsoft purchased ZeniMax Media, the umbrella organization for Bethesda Game Studios, at a hefty price tag of approximately $8.1 billion.
After that point, Bethesda has experienced a somewhat turbulent period, with successes like Doom: Eternal, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, but also the less-than-warmly welcomed Starfield and Redfall. The lukewarm reception to Redfall led to the shutdown of Arkane Austin, the studio known for creating Prey (2017) and Deathloop.
