New Grey’s Anatomy spin-off officially confirmed – and it involves show legend Ellen Pompeo

Big news, Grey’s Anatomy fans – a new spin-off is officially on the way!

I just read on Deadline that Shonda Rhimes, the mastermind behind Grey’s Anatomy, is developing a brand new medical drama set in the same universe! She’s teaming up with Meg Marinis, who currently runs Grey’s, to create it, which is super exciting news for any fan of the franchise like me. We don’t have a title yet, but knowing them both, it’s bound to be good!

Ellen Pompeo, the star of Grey’s Anatomy, will also be an executive producer on the new show. The series was ordered directly to production, skipping the pilot phase, and is scheduled to debut in 2027.

According to Deadline, the new show is a gritty drama focusing on the staff at a small-town West Texas medical center, which serves as the final hope for medical attention in a vast and remote area.

This new Grey’s Anatomy series will differ from past spin-offs like Private Practice and Station 19 by not featuring any main characters from the original show. Instead, it will focus on a new team of doctors, while still being connected to the Grey’s Anatomy universe through guest appearances or recurring characters.

The publication reported that Debbie Allen’s Catherine Fox could be involved.

In a recent statement, Marinis expressed her excitement about creating a new series within the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ world. She explained that the show will introduce fresh characters and storylines with the same emotional depth and relatable connections that viewers have enjoyed for over twenty years, and it will be set in her home state of Texas.

I’m incredibly thankful to Shonda Rhimes for building such a vibrant and compelling universe, and I feel lucky to be involved.

Information about the new spin-off is still limited, and we don’t yet know how many episodes it will have. Sources suggest both the spin-off and the 23rd season of Grey’s Anatomy might be shorter than usual. The original series is expected to air in the fall, with the spin-off premiering mid-season (around early 2027).

Grey’s Anatomy is facing a turning point after its latest season ended with the exits of two popular characters: Dr. Teddy Altman, played by Kim Raver, and Dr. Owen Hunt, played by Kevin McKidd.

As a huge fan of medical dramas, I was thrilled to find out that Grey’s Anatomy is now streaming on Disney+. If you’re looking to binge-watch, you can sign up for Disney+ starting at just £5.99 a month – a pretty good deal, if you ask me!
