A Nintendo Switch game has been canceled right before it was supposed to launch. Games on the Switch often take longer to release than on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC because the Switch is less powerful, requiring developers to do extra work to get them running. Unfortunately, this particular game, which was also released on other platforms, didn’t perform well enough to justify continuing with the Switch version.
This week, Amazon announced it’s shutting down the game King of Meat. Launched less than six months ago by Glowmade, King of Meat was a cooperative platformer focused on user-created content. Unfortunately, the game didn’t attract enough players, leading Amazon to permanently close it on April 9th. As a result, the planned Nintendo Switch version has been canceled, meaning Switch players won’t be able to play the game.
This Game Could Have Thrived on Switch
Honestly, I’m really bummed that King of Meat isn’t coming to the Switch. It feels like Nintendo players would have loved it. Platformers have always been huge on Nintendo consoles, going all the way back to the NES, so I think King of Meat could have really taken off on the Switch. It definitely feels like Glowmade should have prioritized it more.
Even if the rumors were true, King of Meat probably would have failed anyway. The game had very few players on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC – almost nobody was playing. So, even if the Switch version had become popular, Amazon would likely have still decided to close the game’s servers. Because of this, it’s not surprising that the Switch version was cancelled.
