Sega may be planning to bring back a classic Sonic the Hedgehog game. It’s been a great year for the Sonic franchise, with the releases of *Sonic X Shadow Generations* and *Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds*, plus the *Sonic the Hedgehog 3* movie in late 2024. Now, Sega seems ready to build on that success by potentially revisiting another beloved title from the series.
Sega recently trademarked the phrase “Shadow the Hedgehog” in Japan, according to a report from Sonic City. The trademark, filed in September, applies to both merchandise and software related to the character. While it could simply be a standard trademark for Shadow himself, many believe it suggests Sega might be planning a re-release of the 2005 game *Shadow the Hedgehog* on current gaming systems, possibly as a remaster, remake, or port.
Now Is the Perfect Time to Bring This Sonic Game Back

With Shadow the Hedgehog gaining popularity from his appearance in the *Sonic the Hedgehog 3* movie, now is a great time for Sega to consider re-releasing his solo game. A re-release would likely appeal to both longtime fans and those who recently discovered the character.
It’s worth noting that *Shadow the Hedgehog* remains playable only on the original GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox consoles from its 2005 release. This makes it difficult to play today. A remaster would solve this problem and likely make original copies of the game more affordable on the resale market.
Currently, there’s no confirmation that *Shadow the Hedgehog* will be remastered or re-released. However, fans hoping for a comeback have reason to be optimistic, as Sega may announce something related to the game before the end of 2025.
