Next N64 Game Coming to Nintendo Switch Online Announced

Nintendo has announced the next Nintendo 64 game coming to its Switch Online service. Unlike some previous releases that were quietly added, this one is being announced in advance. Subscribers on all Switch models – including the original, Lite, OLED, and the upcoming Switch 2 – will be able to play it starting June 4th. Nintendo is likely making a bigger deal out of this release, hence the announcement before it’s available.

Nintendo recently announced that players with the more expensive tier of Nintendo Switch Online – the Expansion Pack, which costs $50 annually – will be able to download and play Donkey Kong 64 starting June 4th. This classic 3D platformer originally came out in 1994 for the Nintendo 64, created by Rare and Nintendo. It was the last major Donkey Kong game Rare developed before being acquired by Microsoft. Donkey Kong 64 received a score of 90 on Metacritic, making it a top-rated game of its time. While it doesn’t always appear on lists of the greatest N64 games, it’s definitely a strong contender.

N64 Classic Last Seen on Wii U

Nintendo describes Donkey Kong 64 as a new adventure where K. Rool returns to cause trouble. Donkey Kong and his friends must defeat K. Rool and the Kremlings, recover their stolen Golden Bananas, and protect their home. Players can choose to play as DK, Diddy Kong, Tiny Kong, Lanky Kong, or Chunky Kong, either on a solo quest or in competitive battles with friends.

It’s no surprise that fans who grew up with the Nintendo 64 are thrilled to see a classic Donkey Kong game become available on Nintendo Switch Online.

As one popular comment on the YouTube trailer says, “It’s been years!” Another viewer expressed the same sentiment, saying they’ve been eagerly anticipating this for a long time.

Wow, it’s been ages since this N64 game got a proper re-release! Last time I could really play it was back in 2015 on the Wii U Virtual Console, but let’s be real, not a ton of people actually had a Wii U. So, for a lot of us Nintendo fans, it’s been nearly 25 years since we’ve experienced this 1999 classic, and we were really hoping to see it added to the Nintendo Switch Online library.
