The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie could feature characters from many different Nintendo games. However, Nintendo and Illumination, the studio making the film, aren’t planning a Super Smash Bros. movie—something even bigger—at this time. In a recent Polygon interview, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri discussed the movie and hinted at some of the cameos we can expect.
Miyamoto explained that seeing Nintendo characters team up is rare, usually only happening in games like Super Smash Bros. However, he allows characters like Pikmin to appear in any Nintendo game. This means that when these characters do show up, it’s usually just a quick appearance for fans who already know and love Nintendo’s other games.
To start, I don’t believe all Nintendo characters will be included, unlike a game like Super Smash Bros. I’ve always said that Pikmin can appear in any Nintendo game series.
We already had a great cast for the movie, but we decided to include some fun surprise appearances. There’s one secret character in particular who has a significant part to play. We’re considering adding more characters like this in future installments, too.
Chris Meledandri explained that Illumination is currently focusing on individual films rather than considering a larger, connected storyline. This means there aren’t any concrete plans for a shared ‘Nintendo Cinematic Universe’ at this time.
When people talk about a ‘universe’ of stories, I imagine a team of writers carefully planning out years of interconnected movies and characters. But that’s not how we work at all,” he said. “Our approach is much more organic and less pre-planned.
The process focuses on brainstorming enjoyable moments within specific movie scenes. Ideas like, “Wouldn’t it be cool if Pikmin showed up here?” naturally arise. If we like an idea, we then get Mr. Miyamoto’s opinion to see if it feels appropriate. It’s a very spontaneous process, rather than a carefully planned one.
Nintendo recently announced that Fox McCloud, the main character from the Star Fox series, will be in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. This news got fans talking, especially because Fox is a well-loved character in the Super Smash Bros. fighting games. Many now wonder if Nintendo is hinting at a future movie that brings together characters from all of its popular franchises, similar to how they all compete in Super Smash Bros.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now playing in theaters! If you want a sneak peek, the final trailer came out last month. Be careful though – the British Board of Film Classification’s rating information may have revealed a major plot twist for those who want to avoid spoilers.
