Okay, so the sales numbers for April are in, and I’m pretty hyped to say a new Switch exclusive totally topped the charts! It knocked Pragmata down to second place, and even Crimson Desert, which was number one last month, fell to third. The rest of the top ten, in order, looks like this: MLB The Show 26, Windrose, Pokemon Pokopia, the Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 combo, Starfield, Saros, and Mario Kart World. But honestly, this one new Switch game is just on another level!
According to Circana, the best-selling video game in the US right now is Nintendo’s Tomodachi Life Living the Dream, which launched exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on April 16th. Interestingly, it hasn’t been released for the newer Nintendo console, despite the Switch being backward compatible. This is the third game in the Tomodachi series, which began with Tomodachi Collection on the Nintendo DS in 2009 and continued with Tomodachi Life on the 3DS in 2013. The first two games sold around 10 million copies, a strong performance, but Tomodachi Life Living the Dream seems to be exceeding expectations by currently leading monthly sales, even against more prominent titles.
Problem With the Reporting
It’s important to note a significant issue: Nintendo doesn’t provide Circana with its digital sales data. This means Circana has to guess how many digital copies of Nintendo games are sold, using a certain method, but it’s likely not perfectly accurate. We don’t know how inaccurate these estimates are, so every Nintendo game on this list should be viewed with some caution.
If you’re thinking of buying Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, it costs $60. Most players get around 30 to 60 hours of gameplay, and it has a Metacritic score of 77.
Okay, so $60 feels a little pricey, and I know I could probably hold out until the holidays hoping for a sale. But honestly, Nintendo games don’t usually drop in price by much, so I wouldn’t count on a huge discount. It might be worth the wait, but don’t get your hopes up for a massive price cut!
