One of Anime’s Darkest Franchises Shares New Look at Series Return

There’s a wide variety of dark anime available, with popular series like Berserk, Attack on Titan, Death Note, and Devilman known for their grim settings and difficult choices. Some anime, though, don’t immediately seem dark, but end up being surprisingly unsettling. Made in Abyss is a prime example, following young characters navigating a harsh and unforgiving world. With the anime set to return, a new trailer has been released, giving fans a glimpse of what’s in store.

The new movie, Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery, hits theaters on October 23rd, and a new trailer has just been released! The series follows young adventurers exploring a dangerous and mysterious place called “The Abyss,” where they face terrifying creatures and unsettling challenges. The original manga is still being created, so there’s potential for even more anime in the future. Awakening Mystery continues the story from previous films like Journey’s Dawn, Wandering Twilight, and Dawn of the Deep Soul, meaning fans can expect to see Riko and her friends back on screen for a while. Check out the new trailer below!

What is The Awakening Mystery?

Okay, so I’m SO excited about the new Made in Abyss movie! Here’s the story: Riko gets poisoned by a beast in the fourth layer, but thankfully Nanachi saves her! They team up and head down to the fifth layer to find Bondrewd. That’s where they meet Prushka, a girl raised by Bondrewd who’s never seen the surface world. She’s totally captivated by Riko’s stories and wants to join their adventure, but things get really sad as Bondrewd uses her in an experiment. Thankfully, Prushka doesn’t disappear completely – she transforms into Riko’s White Whistle, letting them continue to the sixth layer, the Capital of the Unreturned! There they discover a village of Hollows, each with their own way of life, and meet the princess, Faputa. After Faputa fulfills a wish and frees the village, it starts to fall apart. Riko and her friends then invite Faputa to join them on their journey to the seventh layer! It’s going to be epic!

With the release of the trailer, the series creator, Akihito Tsukushi, discussed a significant change made when adapting the manga for television. He explained that Touka, Rico’s father, who is alive in the story, will move and speak in the series. This is different from the original manga, where Touka remains silent. Tsukushi collaborated with the anime’s scriptwriter, Mr. Kurata, to make this addition.
