Walt Disney Studios is famous for its classic animated films, but they’ve also made many excellent live-action movies. While Disney continues to remake its animated favorites in live-action – with Moana coming soon – Hulu subscribers can now enjoy one of Disney’s best live-action films, even though plans for a TV series based on it didn’t work out.
The popular Disney movie Holes, which first came out over 20 years ago, is now available to stream on Hulu as of May 1st. A planned TV reboot of the film was canceled after a pilot episode was filmed, but fans can still enjoy the original story starring Shia LaBeouf. The movie follows Stanley Yelnats IV, who is wrongly accused of a crime and sent to a harsh juvenile camp. There, he and the other inmates are forced to dig holes in the desert, eventually discovering the warden’s secret treasure hunt and a long-standing family curse.
Holes Is a Perfect 10/10 Book-to-Movie Adaptation
Before the movie Holes came out, readers loved Louis Sachar’s 1998 novel about Caveman, Zero, and the boys at Camp Green Lake. The 2003 film adaptation was also a hit, with many Reddit fans calling it the best book-to-movie adaptation ever made, transforming an already wonderful children’s book into a true masterpiece.
The film is considered a remarkably faithful adaptation of the book, largely because the author, Louis Sachar, wrote the screenplay himself. This allowed the movie to truly capture the heart of the story and handle its complex, interwoven timelines – Stanley’s present-day experience, his family’s history, and the tale of the outlaw Kissin’ Kate Barlow – without losing the audience or skipping important details. The excellent cast also played a key role, with strong performances from both rising star Shia LaBeouf and established actors like Sigourney Weaver and Jon Voight bringing the characters to life with nuance and depth.
What’s New on Hulu?
I’m really excited about all the new stuff Hulu added this May! If you’re looking for something to watch with the family, they’ve got the animated film Robots and all four Descendants movies – perfect timing since Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is coming to Disney Channel in July. But it’s not just for kids! I was thrilled to see movies like Con Air, I, Robot, The Last Duel, Minority Report, and Philadelphia added. And for all us Star Wars fans, they’ve got the original trilogy plus Rogue One – awesome!
