The popular Netflix horror movie Under Paris is getting a follow-up, and the director chosen suggests it could be even more successful than the original. Released in 2024, Under Paris is a French film about a massive shark that terrorizes Paris by swimming up the Seine River. While reviews were mixed, the movie quickly became a hit, reaching number one on Netflix and racking up over 40 million views in its first week – enough to guarantee a sequel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has confirmed a sequel is moving forward, but with a change in directors. Xavier Gens, who directed the first film, won’t be back. Instead, Alexandre Aja – known for horror movies like High Tension, the remake of The Hills Have Eyes, and Piranha 3D and Crawl – will take the helm. His experience with creature features makes him a great choice for Under Paris 2. While Gens wrote the original, it’s currently unknown who will write the sequel.
Under Paris 2 Could Take Franchise Worldwide

The original Under Paris movie strongly hinted at a follow-up. It revealed a massive shark had entered Paris and evolved to survive – and reproduce – in freshwater. Despite the danger of the shark creating more mutated offspring, the city’s mayor dismissed the threat, leading to numerous deaths and allowing the sharks to get away. The film clearly echoed Jaws, both in its terrifying shark and its ineffective leadership.
The movie Under Paris concluded with a post-credits map revealing that Lilith, the mutated shark, and her babies had spread beyond Paris to major cities worldwide – including London, New York, Bangkok, Venice, and Tokyo. This showed the sharks had taken over the entire world, setting the stage for a global disaster that Alexandre Aja can explore in future films.
Director Alexandre Aja, known for his darkly funny horror film Piranha 3D, excels at blending humor with intense action and gore. He’s a great fit for Under Paris 2 because the original Under Paris didn’t take itself too seriously, instead delivering a thrilling and enjoyable shark attack movie in the spirit of classics like Jaws and modern hits like Deep Blue Sea and The Meg. Ultimately, Under Paris 2 needs to be a fun ride, and the new director seems well-equipped to make the sequel even better than the first.
