The Game Boy Advance was a golden age for Nintendo fans. Handheld gaming was becoming incredibly popular, and game creators were starting to push the boundaries of what was possible on portable systems. I have many fond memories of playing my GBA – often late at night or during my commute to school. The games felt huge back then, especially role-playing games that offered tons of content despite being on a small handheld. No series thrived more during this period than Pokémon, which continued to evolve in ways that influenced the franchise for years to come.
The release of Pokemon Emerald on May 1st, 2005, dramatically changed what players expected from a Pokemon game after finishing the main story. Even today, it’s considered one of the best games in the series. Building on the already popular Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, Emerald improved the experience with more content, a better story, and the challenging Battle Frontier. Over two decades later, fans are still hoping to see those features return in future games.
Pokemon Emerald Stands Above the Rest

There’s a good reason why Pokemon Emerald is still a fan favorite. It improved upon the already successful Ruby and Sapphire, similar to how Pokemon Crystal enhanced the original games. The Hoenn region was already known for its great Pokemon designs, interesting gym leaders, and exciting world, and Emerald made all of those aspects even better, giving players a richer experience.
I was absolutely blown away when I first played this game – it felt so much more epic than anything else I’d experienced on the Game Boy Advance. Having both Team Magma and Team Aqua as villains really raised the stakes, and Rayquaza’s involvement made the whole story feel incredibly dramatic and well-connected. It honestly felt like watching a movie! Plus, the music was fantastic and the game moved at a perfect pace. It’s no surprise people are still playing and loving it years later.
While other enhanced versions of Pokémon games like Yellow and Crystal simply expanded on existing content, Emerald truly changed what fans expected. It set a new standard by adding a lot of significant features, leading players to anticipate major additions in future third versions. To this day, no other Pokémon game has matched the amount of post-game content found in Emerald.
The Battle Frontier Changed Pokemon Forever

What really set Pokemon Emerald apart was the Battle Frontier. It’s widely considered the best thing the series has ever offered after you beat the main game. Unlike other post-game content that just gives you tougher opponents, the Battle Frontier introduced completely new battle facilities, each with its own special rules and ways to play. I spent countless hours as a kid mastering it! It made me think about Pokemon battles in a whole new way, experiment with different Pokemon, and ultimately sparked my passion for competitive battling.
The Battle Frontier stood out because it offered something for everyone. It was fun for players looking for a fresh experience, but also challenging enough for competitive players who really knew the game. Earning the Battle Symbols felt great because it took careful strategy, patience, and the ability to adjust to different situations. This kept players engaged for a long time. Many recent Pokemon games have been criticized for not having much to do after you beat the main story, but Emerald fixed that issue twenty years ago. The Battle Frontier gave players a compelling reason to continue building and testing teams even after becoming the Champion.
Many fans, including myself, were really disappointed that the Battle Frontier wasn’t included in the 3DS games, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. People are still asking for it to be added to new Pokemon titles. It feels like a big mistake that it wasn’t in Pokemon Champions, as that game would have been a great place to introduce single-player content separate from the main series. However, it’s still possible for the Battle Frontier to make a comeback.
A Nintendo Switch Port & Future Pokemon Post-games

With the recent success of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on the Nintendo Switch, many fans are speculating that Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire will be the next games remastered for the system. If that happens, players are hoping Nintendo will also include content from Pokemon Emerald, particularly the Battle Frontier. While it might be a big ask, the updates to FireRed and LeafGreen show that Nintendo is willing to add new features. Ideally, though, fans would love to see a full port of Pokemon Emerald instead of just Ruby and Sapphire.
This is a great chance to build on the future of the Pokémon series, particularly with new games like Pokémon Winds and Waves coming out. It’s important for the games to offer worthwhile content after the main story is finished. The Battle Frontier showed how much players appreciate that extra challenge and content. The next generation of games could be the perfect opportunity to bring back a dedicated post-game battling area, offering both solo challenges and opportunities to battle Pokémon Champions.
Recent Pokémon games have better graphics and let you explore more freely, but they don’t offer the same long-lasting challenge as the original Emerald. Bringing back the Battle Frontier, but updating it for modern players, would be a great addition. Features like online leaderboards, daily and weekly challenges, and the ability to share teams with friends would make it even better, and could really showcase the power of the next Nintendo Switch.
The design of Emerald has a lasting appeal because it catered to players who enjoyed really understanding the game’s systems. Even now, over twenty years later, Pokemon Emerald is considered one of the best games in the series. Its impact is still felt today, and its ideas still feel innovative. If future Pokemon games can emulate even a portion of what made Emerald great, the series has a bright future.
