HBO Max has added a record-breaking 2025 film to its April lineup. Last year saw several critically acclaimed and commercially successful movies, including One Battle After Another, Sinners, and Hamnet. Now, those who missed seeing it in theaters can finally stream this highly-rated film on HBO Max.
Timothée Chalamet’s new movie, Marty Supreme, a funny and dramatic sports film rated R, started streaming on HBO Max on April 24th after a very successful run in theaters. The film earned $191 million worldwide and became A24’s highest-grossing movie ever, beating out Everything Everywhere All at Once and other popular A24 films like Civil War, Materialists, and Talk to Me. It also broke records domestically, earning over $80 million, and had the biggest opening day and highest average ticket sales per theater for A24. All this was achieved with a production budget of around $70 million.
Marty Supreme Is One of A24’s Best Movies Ever
Beyond its box office hit, Marty Supreme is being hailed as one of A24’s best films yet. Critics and audiences alike are loving it, giving it a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the “Certified Fresh” label, along with an 82% audience score. The film, directed by Josh Safdie, stars Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a talented but impulsive ping pong player in 1950s New York. Inspired by the story of Marty Reisman, the movie shows Marty’s rise through the competitive world of professional table tennis, and the personal costs of his relentless ambition and reckless choices.
This movie is a fast-paced and gripping look at a complex character, similar in style to Uncut Gems. It expertly blends the frantic energy of 1950s hustle culture with the personal toll it takes on its protagonist. It’s unpredictable, entertaining, and makes even simple scenes, like table tennis matches, feel incredibly intense. The acting is also a major strength, with Timothée Chalamet delivering what many are calling the best performance of his career as a flawed but captivating hustler. The supporting cast, including Odessa A’zion, Tyler the Creator, and Gwyneth Paltrow, add to the film’s unpredictable and energetic vibe. Critics, like Diego Andaluz of Discussing Film, have called it a stunning cinematic achievement, and audiences generally praise its chaotic and high-energy style.
