The newest chapter of One Piece includes a significant fight, but more importantly, it offers key clues about a central mystery in the series. The story currently focuses on pirates battling the World Government, with Luffy increasingly becoming their de facto leader. On the other side, Imu, now known as the World King, leads the government. While Imu’s motives have long been unclear, his direct involvement in combat is starting to reveal his true purpose and the reasons behind his desire for world domination.
I’ve been following the story of Imu, and his relationship with Joyboy is really fascinating. From the beginning, it’s been clear Imu hates Joyboy, but we never knew why. For a while, it seemed like they were enemies – Joyboy, as the first pirate, fighting against Imu and the World Government. But a recent reveal completely changed things. A single panel hinted that their connection is much more complex, maybe even suggesting they were once companions or close friends. It makes you wonder what really happened in the past!
One Piece’s Core Conflict May Have Stemmed From Love and Friendship

In One Piece Chapter 1181, titled “God and Devil,” the fight between Imu and Loki intensifies, and Imu showcases his immense power. He explains that true strength comes from dominance, claiming it’s the only real happiness. A quick image also shows a fleeting thought of Joyboy. This is the first real clue about Imu and Joyboy’s history, hinting they were once close—possibly even friends. It suggests their relationship somehow led to the long-standing conflict that has continued for generations.
From what I’ve gathered, Joyboy was all about freedom, while Imu seemed driven by a need to control everything, and both genuinely believed they were doing the right thing. Recently, a fascinating theory has surfaced connecting Nefertari D. Lily to all of this. It proposes that Joyboy and Lily were lovers, and that Imu was obsessed with Lily. The evidence points to Imu holding onto a picture of Lily and his intense focus on capturing Vivi, who is said to resemble her. The theory suggests that Imu’s jealousy over Joyboy and Lily’s relationship might have actually been the cause of the great war.
Although it might sound unbelievable, past events in One Piece, like what happened at God Valley, were caused by similar reasons. This shows that even with all its fantastical adventures, One Piece often builds its biggest conflicts around very real human feelings. We still don’t know the full story behind Imu and Joyboy’s connection, but it’s interesting to think that their relationship, which seems so important to the story, could be based on something simple and relatable.
