Director Jorma Taccone didn’t simply want to recreate Tommy Wirkola’s Norwegian film, The Trip (originally I onde dager). He aimed to make it his own by adding a strong element of dark humor, setting it apart from the more intense and grim 2021 version.
The movie, directed by Taccone, shares a similar story with the original: Jason Segel and Samara Weaving play Dan and Lisa, a couple struggling in their marriage who go to a remote cabin for a peaceful getaway. Their vacation quickly goes wrong when it’s revealed they’ve both secretly planned to kill each other. Timothy Olyphant plays Pete, and Lisa offers him a tempting deal to murder Dan. Juliette Lewis, Paul Guilfoyle, and Keith Jardine also appear in the film.
In a conversation with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant, director Taccone explained how his movie differs from the original Norwegian thriller and highlighted one key change he made to Over Your Dead Body that makes his version unique.
Over Your Body Brings A Punchy, Dark Humor Missing From The 2021 Original
Wirkola’s film leans into scary, horror-driven themes, firmly establishing it as a thrilling ride, especially due to the hidden agendas of its main characters. However, director Taccone added a lighter touch by making Dan and Lisa more relatable. He infused the movie with his signature humor, a change that the film’s writers, Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney, fully supported.
It’s definitely a remake, not just inspired by the original. The first film had such a clever and unexpected structure, and audiences are so familiar with storytelling now that it’s refreshing to see something truly surprising. While we wanted to maintain the spirit of the original, our version is tonally quite different. We aimed for characters you’d root for a bit more, as the original film was intentionally much harsher and darker, which it did really well. Of course, I wanted to inject my own sense of humor, and the writers, Nick and Brian, were completely aligned with that vision.
Segel shared a similar vision, according to Taccone. They both wanted to maintain the core elements of the original story while also adjusting its overall feel. The director explained that he kept the scenes that fit his new direction for the film and added new characters, like Allegra played by Lewis, to create a different dynamic between the couple at the heart of the story.
Jorma Taccone explained that he and Jason shared a clear vision for the project: to depict a couple rebuilding themselves after falling apart and ultimately finding each other again. A key goal was to blend different emotional tones while staying true to the spirit of the original film, avoiding a typical American remake. While the tone shifted, they focused on preserving the impactful scenes. Taccone emphasized the importance of honoring the source material and avoiding changes made purely for personal preference. The addition of the character Juliet and her storyline created a pleasing balance between the two couples featured in the film.
Over Your Dead Body Takes Subtle Swipe At Film Directors In A Nod to Taccone’s Theater Director Dad
Jorma Taccone, son of a famous theater director, infused the project with his signature dark comedy. He also playfully critiqued his own industry through a scene where Lisa, an off-Broadway actress, jokingly implied that Dan, the film director, didn’t measure up to her expectations of a theatrical genius.
Although he and his father have quite different comedic styles, Taccone says his dad is very proud of him, often calling him a really funny guy. His father’s humor actually inspired Taccone to pursue a more lighthearted approach in his own work.
I had a really interesting upbringing. My dad’s friends included incredibly talented people like Tony Kushner, a major figure in literature and playwriting for the last half-century. So, it’s kind of funny that I ended up known for something silly like ‘Dick in a Box.’ But surprisingly, my dad is really proud of that movie – he actually loves it! He’s a funny guy himself, and I grew up enjoying the comedies he wrote.
