A gripping thriller is quickly becoming a hit on Netflix, featuring several familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since its release, the movie has already climbed to the #7 spot on Netflix’s most-watched list and shows no signs of stopping, with many expecting it to continue rising in popularity.
The action thriller Black and Blue stars Naomie Harris (known from 28 Days Later and Venom), Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Peacemaker), Mike Colter (Luke Cage, The Defenders), and Tyrese Gibson (from the Fast and Furious franchise). The film takes place in New Orleans and follows a new police officer who accidentally records a drug dealer’s murder on her body camera. When she discovers the killers are corrupt police officers, she must find an ally in the local community and go on the run to protect the incriminating footage from both criminals and the police themselves.
It’s a Straightforward Cop Thriller
Though Black and Blue wasn’t a critical success and didn’t offer anything new to the crime thriller genre, Naomie Harris’s performance was a standout. The film received a 49% rating from critics, who felt it had potential but ultimately became a predictable and unremarkable experience. Critic Daniel Howat pointed out that the film missed an opportunity for a thoughtful approach, instead opting for a simplistic and uninspired telling of a complex issue.
Despite negative reviews from critics, audiences loved the film, giving it a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and urging others to see it. One viewer called it “absolutely captivating,” saying they were glued to the screen from beginning to end and thoroughly enjoyed the action, story, and message. While the story shares similarities with the film Training Day and can be a bit over-the-top at times, it effectively delivers its message, thanks to strong performances from experienced actors. Even with some predictable moments, it’s still a solid way to spend a couple of hours.
