It appears the popular series is heading to the movies. Just weeks after reports surfaced, Paramount has officially announced they are working on a new film based on the sci-fi franchise.
During today’s CinemaCon presentation, Paramount announced a new Star Trek movie is officially in development. While details are still scarce, reports indicate Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are writing, directing, and producing the film, which will be an original story.
Goldstein & Daley Are the Right Picks for Star Trek
John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein started their careers as screenwriters, working on comedies like Horrible Bosses (2011), The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013), and Horrible Bosses 2 (2014). They later directed and wrote the 2015 film Vacation, and then co-wrote Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) alongside Jon Watts, Christopher Ford, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers.
The team behind the films also directed the comedies Game Night (2018) and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023). The success of Dungeons & Dragons—which brilliantly captured the fun of playing the game with friends, but on a grand, cinematic scale, and stayed true to the original story—shows Star Trek fans they’re the right people to take on that franchise.
Goldstein and Daley presented their movie idea to Paramount as a fresh start for the Star Trek universe, much like Dungeons & Dragons. They envisioned a standalone story with a completely new cast, separate from existing Star Trek characters and storylines.
The Kelvin Timeline of Star Trek Is Over
Paramount is continuing with plans for a new Star Trek movie directed by Goldstein and Daley. This will be the fourth film in the series that began with J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot. That reboot created an alternate timeline – often called the Kelvin Timeline – which includes the films Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016).
A fourth movie featuring the characters from the Kelvin timeline Star Trek films has been in development since 2016, but has faced numerous setbacks. Over the past decade, several writers and directors – including Quentin Tarantino, S.J. Clarkson, Noah Hawley, and Matt Shakman – have been involved with the project, but each eventually left due to creative differences or scheduling conflicts. The movie was officially canceled in November 2024 after Paramount and Skydance merged, with the studios deciding to reboot the franchise with a new approach.
In January 2026, Chris Pine – known for playing James T. Kirk in the alternate universe films – offered words of encouragement to the new leaders at Paramount. He simply said, “Have fun, good luck, and live long and prosper.”
Like many of the original Star Trek cast, Leonard Nimoy – known as Pine to fans – had hoped to appear in one last film. However, Paramount Pictures is now planning a new course for the franchise, making that unlikely for the time being.
The Star Trek franchise is available to stream on Paramount+.
