Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr revisited their early days and collaborated for the first time on a duet.
Paul recently collaborated with a former Beatles bandmate on a duet for his upcoming album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane. They worked with producer Andrew Watt on a song called “Home to Us,” which reflects on their childhoods together in Liverpool.
At his album release event in Los Angeles on April 16, the 83-year-old shared a story with Billboard about meeting Ringo Starr. He told how he mentioned working with someone named Andrew, and Ringo later came to Andrew’s studio and played the drums for a short time.
Paul explained that a misunderstanding nearly ruined the whole project. Andrew worried Ringo hadn’t played enough drums for the complete song, which upset Ringo, Paul said. Things got even more complicated when Paul sent Ringo a demo to record vocals, but Ringo only sang on the chorus. Paul then assumed Ringo didn’t care for the song.
Luckily, Ringo and the others resolved the issue, and he was able to add his drumming to the track. The outcome was their first time working together on a song, and it became a touching homage to where they all grew up.
“Even though where we lived was a little rough,” Paul said of the track. “It was home to us.”

“Home to Us” is the first duet for these musicians, and it’s also a special moment in Ringo’s career.
At his album launch event, Paul jokingly pointed out to the crowd that Ringo Starr had never performed a duet with any of the other Beatles.
Ringo himself also highlighted the significance of the duet and shared his praise over the song.
He described how Paul took the core of the song and then added all the other instruments. It was a different process than usual—they started with the drums first. He said the result is both funny and authentic, reflecting the band’s origins.
The Boys of Dungeon Lane—Paul’s 21st solo studio album—is out May 29.
