Peacock had planned a sequel series that would have brought back Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz, but the project has now been cancelled after a year of development.
Unfortunately, Peacock has cancelled the planned Clueless sequel series. However, there’s still hope! CBS Studios and Paramount, who believe the original movie remains popular, are looking for a new home for the show. They’ll be pitching it to other streaming services and networks, so it might still happen elsewhere.
The Clueless Sequel Series Gets Axed 1 Year Later
A sequel to the movie Clueless is in the works. Although the plot hasn’t been revealed, Alicia Silverstone is confirmed to return as Cher Horowitz, continuing her story thirty years later. Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss will write the series. Silverstone will also be an executive producer, alongside Schwartz, Savage, Weiss, Robert Lawrence, and the original Clueless director, Amy Heckerling. While originally planned with Universal Television and CBS Studios, Universal is no longer involved in the production.
This is the second time Peacock has cancelled a planned revival of Clueless. Previously, in 2020, they started developing a series that would have focused on Cher’s friend Dionne, played by Stacey Dash in the original movie, but cancelled it in 2021.
Clueless Sparked a Franchise in 1995
As a total movie buff, I remember when Clueless came out in 1995 – it was huge! It practically launched a whole series of films and quickly became one of the defining comedies of the ’90s. The movie, which is actually based on Jane Austen’s Emma, stars Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz, a super-rich high schooler in Beverly Hills who thinks she’s a pro at giving people makeovers and setting them up. The story kicks off when Cher decides to give a new student, Tai (played brilliantly by Brittany Murphy), a total transformation to help her become popular. But as Cher tries to play matchmaker, she starts to realize maybe she doesn’t know everything she thought she did.
The film’s success led to the story expanding into other areas, like books, video games, and a popular stage musical. A TV spin-off also debuted on ABC in 1996. Though Alicia Silverstone was busy with her film career and replaced by Rachel Blanchard as Cher Horowitz, many other actors from the movie joined the show. The series lasted three seasons, ending in 1999.
It’s currently unknown if the recent Clueless sequel series will be picked up by another streaming service, but the original movie is now available to watch for free on YouTube and Pluto TV.
