Pedro Pascal is set to become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Reed Richards, another brilliant scientist-turned-superhero. Just like Tony Stark (portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.), Reed has had numerous interactions with Tony in Marvel Comics, but it seems we won’t see them meeting in the MCU anytime soon. In a chat with ComicBook before the release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, Pascal pondered about their potential dynamic. He suggested that Reed might be able to match Tony’s intelligence, but may lack his charm. Interestingly, both Downey Jr. and Pascal will appear together on screen, though likely not as their MCU characters – this will happen when “First Steps” premieres on Friday, July 25th.
Pascal remarked, “I’d have been utterly baffled by him.” He added, “Frankly, I doubt I would have engaged in his type of conversation. If he happened to discuss science, though, I’d be ecstatic. But if he was leading a discussion, I suppose I’d simply listen and watch as an observer.
In his ten-year run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tony was often sarcastic and arrogant, but Pascal could be right when suggesting a heartfelt conversation about science. The Avengers had their disagreements since their initial assembly in 2012, yet Tony rarely targeted Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). Instead, they quickly bonded in the lab, which played a significant role in shaping Avengers: Age of Ultron. It’s plausible that Tony would have toned down his jabs to engage in technical discussions with Reed.
In an unexpected turn, it’s revealed that the MCU’s Mr. Fantastic, Reed Richards, will face a significantly complex antagonist, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., who’ll be embodying Victor von Doom. The specifics of Doom’s connection to Iron Man, Tony Stark, are yet to be disclosed, but it’s clear that he wasn’t merely added as an Easter egg. Instead, it seems Doom will present a unique character, distinct from Tony Stark, despite his appearance potentially causing emotional turmoil among the Avengers in future films.
It remains uncertain just how significant a role Doom will have in the film “First Steps“. While the narrative primarily focuses on the Fantastic Four battling Galactus, there are whispers of a Doom cameo at the very least. Moreover, it’s been hinted that by the movie’s end, we might witness a spaceship departing Earth and venturing into uncharted territories, setting up events for “Avengers: Doomsday“. Some speculate that Marvel may be concealing a more elaborate plotline for Doom in this film.
Regardless of the situation, the wait won’t be for much longer as The Fantastic Four: First Steps will hit the theaters this coming Friday, July 25th.
