Many fans of the Percy Jackson books were disappointed with the movies that came out in the 2010s. So, when Disney announced a new TV series based on the same stories, people were understandably cautious.
Thankfully, this time, fans needn’t have worried.
The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, starring Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover, was well-received by critics. The first episode alone attracted over 13 million viewers in its debut week. A major reason for its success is Rick Riordan, the author of the original Percy Jackson books, who also wrote and executive produced the TV series. He hadn’t been involved with the previous Percy Jackson movies.
When TopMob visited the set while season 2 was being filmed (and a third season has since been announced), Rick Riordan was there to address our questions about Percy Jackson.
How does it feel to be filming a second season and to see the world you imagined springing to life?
It’s amazing! I still can’t believe we’ve made it to a second season, especially considering how much work went into getting here. It’s fantastic to finally see everything come together.
It’s been a long time since you first wrote the Percy Jackson story. Now that you’re creating the TV show, are there any changes you made that you think are improvements over the original?
It’s amazing how much things change in twenty years. It’s great to revisit this story, keep its core the same, but also update it to feel current and connect with what’s happening now. I think Greek myths have endured for so long because they deal with universal themes that always resonate.
Look, some core aspects of this story have to stay true – it’s what fans expect. But honestly, what impressed me most is how the filmmakers managed to make it feel completely new and relevant for a modern audience. They didn’t just rehash old ideas; they genuinely revitalized them.

Percy Jackson fans are incredibly passionate about the series. Knowing that, how nervous were you before the first season came out? The show made some changes to the original story, and were you concerned fans wouldn’t like those changes?
We were pretty sure people would like the changes we made, and we talked about them a lot. The whole team was very aware of the history of the books and what fans would expect, and we kept that in mind throughout the process.
We don’t feel restricted by the source material, but we all feel a responsibility to treat it with respect. That shared understanding is great because adapting a story from one format to another always requires some adjustments.
I don’t want to claim all the success for myself. This project was a real team effort, and it took a lot of people working together to make it happen. No one person could have done it alone – it truly feels like a collaborative sport, and that’s something I’ve really learned while working in television.

It feels like Walker Scobell is growing so fast! He’s getting so tall, it’s almost unbelievable – it’s something I hadn’t even thought about before.
