PlayStation recently offered a free giveaway to PS5 owners, but it wasn’t the full Saros game. The new PS5 exclusive from Housemarque and Sony still costs $70 on the PlayStation Store, and a price drop isn’t expected soon – perhaps not until the holidays. However, players who already have the game, or are waiting for a sale, can enjoy some new free downloadable content in the meantime.
Today, May 3rd, a pair of creators released six free profile pictures (avatars) for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 users. These avatars are themed around the game Saros. While PlayStation doesn’t offer free avatars with every game release, they’ve been doing it more often for major titles. It’s notable that the creators’ previous game, Returnal, didn’t get this treatment, suggesting Saros is considered a particularly important release for PlayStation. It’s currently unclear how long these avatars will be available, but the lack of an expiration date suggests they might be permanent additions. PlayStation has offered both permanent and time-limited avatars in the past. You can view the new free avatars below.

One of the Best Games of 2026 So Far
As we approach the midpoint of the year, Saros is currently the fourth highest-rated game of 2026, earning an 87 on Metacritic. That puts it just behind Mewgenics, Resident Evil Requiem, and Pokémon Pokopia. While an 87 is usually not quite enough to win Game of the Year, this year has been relatively slow so far. Also, if GTA 6 is released as planned during the holidays, many other games will likely be pushed to 2027, reducing the competition and potentially boosting Saros’ chances. Currently, it’s definitely a contender for Game of the Year, although our official review wasn’t overly impressed, noting that it doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor, Returnal.
